'It was tough, but worth fighting for' said one striker
Catering staff, all Siptu members are returning to work tomorrow after voting to accept the LRC deal at noon today.
The strike was in it's seventh day, when Siptu members were balloted whether or not to accept the terms of the new offer at the Glenside pub in Churchtown.
Strikers took to the picket lines at 6am but temporary workers supplied by a labour agency were sent in at 5am.
Paul Bell, announced that there was some ground breaking precedence in the offer. The dispute is around the transfer of staff to Aramak/Cambell catering.
Under the terms overwhelmingly voted for by staff by a secret ballot today' Mount Carmel has confirmed that any changeover of contract in the future will not result in the dimunition of the terms and conditions ofr employment of persons transferring to Aramak at this time.' Furthermore ' any contract awarding process entered into by the hosptal in the future will require bidders to operate on the basis of maintenance of terms and conditions of employment as an element of any bid.' Also agreed was the maintenance of pay and conditions if the outsourced catering (and associated laundry) if these services were to be returned to direct provision.
There were huge cheers as the results were read out and welcomed by the mostly women members.
Another said 'We fought and we won'.
