Smoggie Queens shows how far BBC comedy has fallen, says Steven Tucker. Let's be honest, there's only one reason the corporation made this awful TV programme, and it's certainly not because it's funny.

Galway Shell to Sea: Conscience V Corruption, Maura Endures to Prevail

category galway | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Monday September 15, 2008 19:40author by TD - S2S Report this post to the editors

"It's not my gig"

At today's gathering of the FF faithful in Galway, Cowen warned that Ireland is facing "much tougher" economic times, unfortunately, at the chic 4-Star Clayton hotel, venue of the "think-in" the hard times were very much in abeyance with designer nosh dished up at lunch time by that establishment's "world class chef." Meanwhile, outside the gates of Shell's Glengad compound, Maura Harrington was on Day 7 of her hunger strike with a supine, anesthetized mainstream media barely reporting on her plight.

Along with the No 2 Lisbon 2 and USI activists augmented by a coach load of beleaguered Sligo people trying to save their cancer services, Galway Shell to Sea picketed the hotel for 5 hours with Eoghan Fox bearding FF Senator Marc MacSharry who had the temerity to vent his bullshit on the Sligo people but who limply slunk away, when challenged by Eoghan, with a mumble that sounded something like; "It's not my gig," this, from a fellow who was spokesperson for the Marine and Natural Resources in the 22nd Seanad (see Related Link).

Thanks from Erris Shell to Sea and from Rossport Solidarity Camp for making sure of our protesting presence outside that FF party meeting. Maura Harrington's hunger strike is now into a seventh day - the situation is getting more urgent as the hours pass. Time for us all to get active all around the country as well as here in Erris and put some real pressure on Shell and the government!

IshtarCelt! Galway S2S can be contacted at galwayshelltosea@yahoogroups.com

As I'm returning to the Rossport Solidarity Camp tomorrow, Eoghan Fox is the main man to contact regarding future pickets and actions.?

This evening in the Nun's Island Theatre (2 mins walk from Mill Street Garda Station) at 6PM, well known author, freelance journalist and activist, Michael McCaughan will be launching his new book ‘The Price of our Souls: Gas, Shell and Ireland’ (discussion afterwards).

In a thoughtful article in today's Irish Time titled: "You don't build trust through gunboat diplomacy" Fintan O'Toole writes that; "A final opportunity exists for consent to replace coercion over the Corrib gas project; the State must take it ... Even with this tweaking of the law in Shell's favour, the project has been marked by some obvious illegalities. Eamon Ryan himself failed to issue notices of consent to some of the current work at Glengad, as required by law - an "oversight" we were told. Shell built a road at Glengad without planning permission - An Bord Pleanála allowed them to retain it. A Shell contractor carried out entirely unauthorised drilling in the Glenamoy area of special conservation - it was ordered to restore the area but no prosecution was taken ... That it has been allowed to happen is a particular disgrace for the Green Party and especially for its brightest star, Minister for Energy Eamon Ryan ... Having supported the protesters and been elected partly on a promise to review the entire project, Eamon Ryan has a personal moral obligation to take on that responsibility.

I can be contacted on the above number if needs be. Send me a txt and Ill make sure your added to list etc.

So its not your gig!!!!? Im afraid it is McSharry. His silence was deafning. Ignorance rulled that day in the Clayton. They thought the would have a nice conference in Galway, and take a few token letters and concerns from the poor people of Sligo.

But where they fly............ We will not be far!!!!

Keep it up comrades!
