CLARE LISBON COUNT QUESTIONED

The disparity between the yes and no votes cast in Clare in the Lisbon Treaty must be clarified, a spokesman for Republican Sinn Fein said today.

Paddy Kenneally from Crusheen said that there is no listing of how individual polling stations voted and only a final figure was sent to Dublin where the result was announced.

In all other votes, there is a breakdown available for each electoral area and this occasion should be no different he said.

We are going to raise the matter with the Returning Officer as we are concerned that the yes figure did not tally with what we were finding on the ground.

We feel that it would be a far more democratic exercise, if a listing of how the individual polling stations voted were made public. In that way we
could see what areas voted yes or no instead of the blanket figure issued at the end of the count.

We will be raising these issues with the officials responsible for the count. We in RSF distributed over twelve thousand anti Lisbon Treaty leaflets and we find it puzzling that Clare was the only county in all of Munster to return a yes vote.

We also wish to thank all our members and supporters who worked in the campaign and all those who voted no in Clare.
