Democracy Denied
Come along. This should be an interesting meeting, given how it will effect people in the North

Why no socialist speakers?
The following CAEUC-affiliated groups all have branches in Belfast: Socialist Party; Irish Socialist Network; Socialist Workers Party.
The simple answer, I suppose, is that the organisers don't like those vocal fringe groups.
They prefer establishment parties like SF, the SDLP and the DUP. Isn't eirigi a vocal fringe group? Oh wait, they're also within the family - trustworthy left-nationalists.
Why no Socialists? Are you a member of the board for socialist certifications?
Both Sinn Féin and the SDLP describe themselves as socialists, of varying hues.
As for éirígí, it can hardly be denied that they are a socialist organisation given their stance on social and economic matters since their formation.
If the only parties who can be described as socialist are trotskyites like the sp and swp, who by the way have next to no support in the area of belfast where this meeting is taking part, then the left is in a dire position.
regarding your comment about trustworthy left nationalists, you should consider connolly's position: "the trends of revolutionary thought in ireland - the nationalist and the socialist - are not antagonisitc, but complimentary."
You're missing the point, the problem with this meeting isn't that there are no real socialists on the platform it's that Sinn Fein and the SDLP have the bloody nerve to speak at a meeting in the North against the Lisbon treaty when they are implementing a neo-liberal agenda through the Assembly. The SDLP are tories. Sinn Fein are hypocrites on Lisbon. In the south they argue against Lisbon because it will bring in more privatisation and it will speed up the race to the bottom! In the north they are implementing privatisation, Bairbre de Bruin closed hospitals as health minister! The are also calling for a no vote on the basis the treaty should be re-negotiated - a load of nonsense, lets wait until Cowen, Harney, Sarkosy and Berlosconi come back with a better deal for working class people - what a joke!
