Mumia is innocent! Free Mumia Abu-Jamal! Abolish the racist death penalty!
Over 20 supporters of framed up death row inmate Mumia Abu Jamal protested his innocence and called for his freedom in a demonstration outside the US Embassy in Ballsbridge on Saturday 19 April.
The protest was built by a united front committee comprised of members from the Connolly Youth Movement, International Bolshevik Tendency, Workers Solidarity Movement and individual Free Mumia activists. It was part of an international day of action in response to the ruling of Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia on 27 March against a new trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal. The court also ruled that any future hearing on his case (to take place within the next 6 months) would be strictly limited to the question of whether he should be put to death or spend the rest of his life in jail.
Mumia has been imprisoned on death row for a quarter of a century, convicted of a crime he did not commit. He was framed for the murder of a Philadelphia police officer because of his history of political activism and his record as a journalist who was not afraid to speak out for the oppressed. The US courts have refused to admit a wealth of evidence that proves his innocence, including the confession of a man who said he killed the police officer. His case dramatically illustrates the racism that lies at the heart of the US justice system and particularly in the use of the death penalty. Winning Mumia's freedom will be a victory for all oppressed people that will resonate around the world.
Greetings were read to the Dublin protest from the Partisan Defense Committee in Britain and the organisers of the demonstration in San Jose.
The event was compèred by Darren C. and contributions to the open mic were made by supporters of the Partisan Defense Committee, the Workers Solidarity Movement and the International Bolshevik Tendency.
