You are invited to join a vigil at Shannon airport on 23 March 2008 from 5 PM to 6 PM to show your opposition to the involvement of Shannon airport in international networks of torture, enforced disappearances and secret detentions.
A vigil will be held at Shannon airport on 23 March 2008 from 5 PM to 6 PM as part of an ongoing protest against the role of the airport and Ireland in facilitating international networks of torture. It will take place at the small roundabout just before the security hut/entrance to the airport.
In a recent report, Amnesty International exposed the illegality and cruelty of the CIA’s secret prisons based on the experiences of Khaled Al-Maqtari, an ex-detainee in one of the ‘black site’ prisons. One of the most shocking revelations was that the plane that was used to transport Khaled had stopped at Shannon airport to be refueled before picking him up. This use of Irish airports directly implicates the Irish government.
The Amnesty report is at http://www.amnesty.ie/live/irish/article.asp?id=17857&p...ge=00.
Being the week following the 5th anniversary of the start of Iraq war, the vigil will also remember the suffering of the Iraqi people over the past 5 years.
