Successful Shell To Sea Picket On The Finglas Road (23/02/08)

category dublin | anti-capitalism | news report author Saturday February 23, 2008 15:45author by Nikita - CYM

This afternoon, activists gathered at the shell station on the Finglas road for a picket called by the Connolly Youth Movement. Comrades from many different political backgrounds joined us in our support of the Rossport people and opposition to the dangerous pipeline being built in Mayo without the consent of the local community.

Around 20 people attended the picket, which lasted for one and a half hours from 1pm until 2.30pm. There was a great atmosphere at the event courtesy of the fine tunes being played on the new picket boombox, featuring the nice traditional airs of one of the Rossport five, Vincent Mc Grath. Also sporadic dancing from some our comrades, added to the overall positive vibes of the picket.

We joined by several members of the Special Branch and several Gardaí but state harassment was minimal compared to previous pickets.

The picket will continue again next month on The Finglas Road as we continue to put pressure on Shell to go offshore and respect the rights of the local community. We ask all those can, to attend the next day of action in Rossport on the 29th of February. Otherwise see you at the next picket.

Proving that he has not lost touch with the grassroots of the Green activist movement, the Minister for Natural Resources cycled up to Glasnevin to join in the protest.

(actually that just someone in a mask, but we can dream)

Four more pictures.

The big question is: Will Topaz stop buying fuel from Shell now that they are dropping the Shell brand? Or is it just the brand they don't like?
