Rossport Endures to Prevail; Today Smelt Like Victory (photos)

category mayo | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Friday November 09, 2007 20:21author by TD - Shell to Sea

Not in our name !

Today, to commemorate Shell's judicial murder of the Ogonii 9 and a look back in anger at the Garda baton-fest a year ago, some 400 activists journeyed from all reaches of Ireland to voice our outrage outside and inside Shell's Bellanaboy site, I was with the section of protestors that first manned the front line at Bellanaboy bridge at 6AM at the request of S2S when it was rightly surmised that Shell and the Guards would attempt to steal a march by bringing the workers in early - for a while, before Garda weight of numbers prevailed, we were effective in blockading and preventing them from earning their 30 pieces of Mammon silver inside.
shelltosea_1.jpg

After being prevented from joining the main group by a two deep line of Guards, we successfully scaled the gates of the refinery to be greeted inside with wanton violence and rough handling by Shell's thugs dressed in security uniforms.

What stimulated the title was an encounter with a German from Riegen and a couple from the UK Midlands who had spent the previous 48 hours travelling overland from mainland Europe and England just to attend today's protest, what committment?, even so, the people of Erris match it and, further afield, activists, who with a granite sense of conscience turn up again and again in Bellanaboy to bear witness against a rogue corporation and their shoe shine boys in government who pave and grease their way?.

Very gutsy stuff, fair play and solidarity to you all for your actions.
Just wish I could have been there today, couldnt stop thinking about it all morning!
The state resorted to very public expressions of violence last November and have since been very careful not to let the facade slip and have instead resorted to underhanded acts of brutality, intimidation and physical force.
And all this in defence of a multinational that is stripping our country of one of the few valuable natural assets we have been given and trampling all over a small rural community while doing so.
Onwards!
Lets keep each others energy alive!
The road is long.

There's an interesting shot of a security guard above, employed by Brendan Gilmore, with a green first aid sticker on his hard hat.

He appears to be holding a person on the ground by their neck, presumably against their will.

Does anyone know his name or the company that trains Brendan Gilmore personnel in first aid? In my many years' down in Richmond Park with the John's Ambulance, it's a move I'd never come across before.

It's certainly an odd business for a first aider to be involved in...

32 County Sovereignty Movement Condemn Gardai Brutality at Bellanaboy.

The 32 CSM condemns the brutality displayed by the gardai against protesters at the Shell refinery site in Bellanaboy, Co Mayo on Friday 9th November. Three of members of the Sovereignty Movement were among those assaulted by the gardai who were described by many as acting in an extremely heavy handed manner. These same three members, as members of the Raytheon 9, were assaulted by the RUC/PSNI when protesting against Raytheon’s presence in Derry. It seems both states in Ireland are happy to use their state police to protect the positions of multi national death merchants. The 32 CSM are disgusted but not surprised by the actions of the free state police who have consistently acted against their own citizens in defence of wealth, privilege , private enterprise and multi national corporations for decades. The free state police are now acting as nothing more than a private security firm on behalf of a corporation who has shown scant regard for the rights or people of the sovereignty of the nations they have stolen resources from.. The 32 CSM urge all their members, all republicans and indeed all the progressive forces across the nation to unite to challenge the great gas giveaway believing as we do that the wealth of a nation belongs to the people of the nation and that , in the words of Padraig Pearse “The nations Sovereignty extends not only to all men and women of the nation, but to all its material possessions; the nation’s soil and all its resources, all the wealth and the wealth producing processes within the nation”
Protect our national resources, defend our national sovereignty.

For the record I was there from 7a.m. to 8.40 a.m. when I departed to go to my place of work as a PAYE worker.

What was the going rate for the 300+ cops on duty that day at Ballinaboy?

Did it come from taxpayers money or did Shell throw in a few bob??

Is the figure of €1,000 EACH for the day an accurate one; if not what is the accurate figure???

One of the photo captions reads "And some crime-ridden communities ask where all the cops are..." - they are upholding democratic right of a developer to construct what has gone through due process. You might not agree with the pipeline etc thus far but the law of the land has sided with the developer regarding the siting of the terminal and that should be it. But it obviously isn't in Shell to Sea's case. You continue to break the law by holding illegal protests that block traffic on a public highway and then tresspass on private property. I can't believe you have the gall to post such a caption when the issues are results of your deliberate and conscious anarchistic actions.

Smug place to be is with the clear minded, sensible majority of the population. You're a minority force now. You've lost your sense of direction completely. You're not evcen a cause celebre anymore. You've alienated yourselves completely. Look at what happened to your candidates in the national and Seanad elections. Yes, of course the protests will continue, that is your DEMOCRATIC right to do so, but do it in a law abiding way that doesn't infringe on the safety and well being of anyone involved (it is absolutely ludicrous to read that someone had the stupidity to put his/her foot under an approacheing HGV!!!). It is your actions that has resulted in the Gardai being in Bellanaboy. I remember a time when there were only a handful of Gardai there (all from Bangor Erris) and protests continued on a peaceful basis. Then mob rule took over. The security guard quoted in a later post is correct about what has happened in the last year - but it is as a result of the actions of the anarchic 'fringe element' of S2S that has brought it to this level. You are the reason the tax payer (every law abiding citizen in Ireland) is paying for the Gardai to be in Erris. Take a good hard look at yourselves and really tell me if you want Shell to process this field at sea - of course you don't. Shell to Hell I have heard on many occasions whilst in NW Mayo.

author by LPpublication date Sun Nov 11, 2007 18:56author address author phone

Shell to Sea have always been a minority in Ireland. Otherwise we would have over 3 million at our protests. Those who support the current project configuration are an even smaller minority, as poll after poll shows (most recently in the Irish Times). Shell to Sea didn't run any candidates in the election. No-one put their foot under a HGV, they lay on the road and the Gardaí directed the truck (which had stopped) to keep moving. A lot of people would consider standing in front of a tank ludicrous, yet it remains one of the abiding images of the Chinese struggle for democracy. Those people didn't have a democratic right to protest. Should they have stayed at home until they were given one? The protests have always been peaceful. It is the reaction to them that became violent. I wasn't quoting a security guard, I was quoting an ex-Garda speaking at his retirement do in Mulranny. This talk about "anarchic fringe element"s is guff. The guards renege upon their duty to enforce the law in Erris time and again, most recently when they actively sought to facilitate the illegal drilling in the SAC. People are now morally obliged to fill that vacuum and protect themselves and their neighbours. I want Shell to go to Sea first. Where they go after that is down to them.

my tax money is being wasted by those guards being there. So, to save the public purse, tell shell to go to sea. they got rigged pla\nning permission, and a craven government who ordered the police to protect the gas giveaway for Frank Fahy and Co, Put the terminal offshore, and save garda overtime. everyone's happy except shell, but their huge profits will ease the pain.

Actually shell to have allowed themselves to be the host for various disaffected parasitic groupings who are looking for some sort of platform to cause trouble and mayhem and by permitting this , monaghan and co have completely lost direction of the campaign.

Shell to Sea didn't run any candidates in the election.

Dr Cowley ,Gerry Murray ,Dr Garavan ,Remind us how these fellows faired while running with the s2s pack .

No-one put their foot under a HGV, they lay on the road and the Gardaí directed the truck (which had stopped) to keep moving. A lot of people would consider standing in front of a tank ludicrous, yet it remains one of the abiding images of the Chinese struggle for democracy.

I know what any right minded person would do if they thought for the slightest that they were about to get clipped by a wagon …. Run like F@+k in the opposite direction .

Those people didn't have a democratic right to protest. Should they have stayed at home until they were given one? The protests have always been peaceful

The protestors have had ample time to enter meaningful discussion as past number of years, However there refusal and constant movement of the goal posts have made them look foolish and shown them in similar light of the bull mcabe.

As Andrew posted, the troll comments are interesting - both in their bluster and vacuity.

Bluster about cop expenditure (as opposed to addressing the putative €1,000 per day - any info forthcoming?) ignores the €300 BILLION elephant in the corner ...

Using the Dept of Marine's own figures of €455 BILLION in natural resources off our coast; factoring the Burke/Ahern ceding of 50% ownership and adding a modest royalty payment, one arrives at the missing €300 BILLION.

Last weeks so called protest , the concept of which I supported, served to do little except further alienate members of the public who might have slight appreciation of the efforts of locals in relation to the gas issue. What is a most noble cause has been hijacked by both left wing and anarchists who have their own agenda. If any right thinking person were to take up a cause they believed in I am sure that they would not want people with terrorist connections as part of their entourage. Also the use of comrades in many posts would not encourage people as it is a throw back to the old USSR and we know how wrong that place went and how bad it was.

We live in a democracy and have to believe in some sort of norms. The only reason so many cops as they keep being referred to are present is due to the actions of the protestors. Any large demonstration will have Garda coverage but when it is carried out as this one has been it will attract even more attention. So in this case the only persons who can be blamed for the deployment of so many Gardai are the protestors. You then have the bottle to question the cost of having them there. In any case if they make €1000 p /w they pay tax at the high rate so only 20% of their wages actually come from tax payers pocket. They almost fund themselves.

All people I spoke to regarding the issue of the casualty inflicted by the protestor from monaghan responded with the analagy of what would you expect from an ass only a kick same as what do you expect when you put your leg under the wheel of a truck.

AS long as this continues you will be responsible for the Gardai making loads of money travelling to police you and little will be achieved for your cause. S2S need to enter mainstream politics and put up candidates in various constituencies where support is highest in both national; and local elections. This is the best way forward in our democratic society and perhaps S2S may hold the balance of power in the next election.

THere is now a need for a reality check amongst S2S. It would appear that some are suffering from swelled head syndrome due to their media exposure mainly for court appearances. I am aware of the upcoming appeals of a number of S2S members for sentences handed down by the local Judge. If these go the wrong way will there be more crying about the corrupt system just because the result did not suit or will the result be accepted.

For now adios amigos hope to return soon when you sort things out.

The Environmental Protection Agency has given its approval to the controversial gas refinery plant being built by Shell in Bellanaboy, Co Mayo.

The agency has attached 90 conditions to the licence relating to the environmental management, operation and monitoring of the plant.

The EPA says it is satisfied that gas emissions from the plant will not pose a major environmental risk.

It also says it will be carrying out independent inspections of the plant, the results of which will be made available to the public.

author by jdpublication date Tue Nov 13, 2007 11:33author address author phone

Hands up all who are surprised by the EPA decision. That has been a foregone conclusion since
big business was appointed to the EPA board.
EPA only takes account of environmental protection. It does not even consider human health.

Green Party calls for removal of EPA director:
"Ms Burke’s position is no longer tenable"......“Minister Cullen has made a series of appointments to the executive board of the EPA which show all too clearly that he sees the Agency as protecting the interests of business, with environmental protection being given a very low priority.” Trevor Sargent TD

Mayo CC was responsible for the monitoring of the former ASAHI Plant

"The Council are very concerned over the exceedences recorded in the samples taken. Maximum concentration for COD specified in your (Asahi) Water Pollution Licence is 100mg/l.
A considerable number of the samples taken exceed this limit, some by up to 300%. In addition the level for cyanide has been exceeded in both months. On the 14th Oct the value was 0.12 mg/l compared to an allowable .05."

The council again wrote to Asahi on Feb 26 when it pointed out that the January samples exceeded the COD level, in one case by over 200%.

There is hardly a person in N. Mayo who is sorry to see the back of Asahi because of the way it was allowed to pollute Killala Bay. Many cancers and deaths are blamed on this pollution. People even moved house to get as far away as possible.

You may go on about the government and its cohorts, but remember they were voted in by the general public in the recent general election. If your political affiliations lie elsewhere (which is quite obvious they do) and the anti project support was so strong then why oh why weren't your party members for the area elected to Dail Eireann? Like it or not, the only way to go now is to the EU Courts and somehow I don't think they are going to change this one (believe me, before the EPA granted this licence they would have sought legal advice both within and outwidth the Irish judiciary).

Regarding the reference to the Asahi plant and MCC, a different animal completely in a different time. We all know that MCC are not up to the job but to compare Asahi and The Corrib Terminal to one another is laughable. But then again so are alot of things when it come to the way this project is being handled by both sides.

In case people didn't spot it already 'Former S2S' is clearly our troll returning with a yet another new identity. Apart from anything else the posting time (2 o'clock in the morning Irish time) is a dead give away. The troll is clearly located in America as his posts to the site (made using well over a dozen different names intended to imply he is 'local' or as above once involved in the campaign) are made over a span which fits into American daylight hours (you won't for instance see him posting at 9 in the morning Irish time).

The agenda is interesting as his posts are somewhat sophisticated. They aim to achieve the following goals and our friend has no qualms about telling whatever lies he wants to do so.
1. Sow disunity in this campaign between local people in Mayo and their supporters elsewhere (as in this example)
2. Suggest that the campaign is over in an effort to demoralise people
3. Suggest to supporters elsewhere that the campaign had no real local support anymore (an angle he dropped in the last weeks following the poll post published by JM but I'm sure it will reemerge).
4. Lie about actual events on the ground, often by pretending to be an eyewitness in an effort to make protesters sound violent and unreasonable and the cops as just doing their job.

The question of his identity is interesting as he clearly has access to some local information. This suggests one of two things
1. Its someone employed by Shell in an official capacity who has access to reports from the Shell site. This is possible but I think the less likely explanation, in general the interventions on indymedia by Shell PR firms have been pretty obvious and short lived. They prefer to concentrate on the media where money buys influence and they can't be replied to, indymedia clearly proved to be too much like hard work.
2. It's someone from the area who has migrated to the US but is still in contact with people back home who have a connection with the project. If so its interesting as the sheer volume of their posts (hundreds over the last couple of years) and the delibertely dishonest and manipulative nature of them suggests a bitter character with an axe to grind with the bulk of the population of Rossport. Probably somebody who made themselves very unpopular when they were actually living there who is looking to get his own back.

As I sat eating my evening meal, considering all the worthwhile things that others could do, I recalled a seascape, from a head.
And then I remembered, twas Mullaghmore in nearby Sligo (you can see Nephin from there), which is incidently, holding the final stage of the World Rally Championship, to be shown, live, to a worldwide audience of quite a lot of people.
Rally cars use petrol, I think, some of which is provided by the aforementioned Shell, I assume.
The roads in the area are about 5-6 people chained together in width, and its not like there's going to anywhere near the same number of security types present.
Wonder if anyone has considered this? Apart from myself of course, dismissing it immediately as something I'm not prepared to do, or would even consider, again...

Charles i cannot believe your suggesting ppl chain themselves together infront of a rally, are you eating that meal tru a straw?

See MH i think now i see where the atittude comes from, you know the one that got you in front of the judge on the D&D charge. See M it appears you cannot tell the difference when your in and out of the classroom? You might be the big fish in the class, its not quite the same when you walk among adults M. but when you close the door and walk into Gardai, allow yourself to get pushed in your van into Gardai and showing your true colours in a drunken display in Galway, well its pretty obvious theres something fundamentally wrong.

You see M I know Mayo and i Know the west of that county, the ppl over there dont like a bully and above all one that elects onesself ahead and above all others

Ah well what am i saying sure those ppl know this already.

Len,

MH's true colours have also been seen by the parents of the children in her school, 100% of whom have stated in writing that they want her removed from her position. She also scores a rather tragic 1.1 on RateMyTeacher, with 1.0 being the lowest possible score.

"the ppl over there dont like a bully and above all one that elects onesself ahead and above all others"
and I might add that attempts at intimidating non followers of your campaign is counterproductive

Andrew

I must point out that Trolls are imaginary creatures that eat Billy-Goats and in fact do not exist in reality. It would appear that you like many more have left reality behind and become paranoid about any person publishing that goes against your view.

I am indeed a Mayo person living in Mayo obviously proving this beyond doubt in this forum is hard but I do not live in the US as you so put it or am not employed by Shell that I know of. As regarding the timing of my earlier post have you ever heard of shift work. We have it here too in Ireland. I never claimed to be a Rossport local as you inferred in your post.. Also your comment about me being Probably "somebody who made themselves very unpopular when they were actually living there who is looking to get his own back". This is a very juvenile comment to make attempting to portray me as some local outcast. I am more local that those 3 yahoos that were arrested at the protest or the idiot who left his foot under a moving lorry. I notice one of the 3 was arrested at another protest outside stormont. I read this on eirigi web site. Are these rent a protester from NI since they have nothing to do there now

What about you Andrew where are you from. If I apply your logic you are one of the following
1) One of the Dublin brigade of socialist comrades. Most probably on the dole but possibly a student. Working class from a working class family where nobody ever worked. You sponge off the state dole and rent allowance etc and spend your spare time on boards such as this spreading the socialist message to anybody who will listen.
2) A dissident republican eirigi or some sort again dole etc applying.
3)just plain mad with no grasp on reality with a bed waiting at Mayo General psych unit.

Your reluctance to take on board constructive criticism is some what stereotypical of an extremest view. Thankfully right thinking people are in the majority here. You and the other comrades would probably have us back in good old communist society. A concept that is tried and failed.

I ask the question S2S must look at and answer truthfully
"Have we gone too far" the right thinking answer is yes and then once this is grasped "How do we fix it ?"
