Irish Republican Media on the Web

Interview carried out by IrishRepublican.net Team

What is Free Derry Media? Who runs it?
Free Derry Media is an Irish Republican broadcasting group with videos from various republican organisations. Free Derry Media is currently run by a handfull of young republicans from Derry city.

On what grounds was it established and what are it's aims?
FDM was formed to promote Ireland's history, at home and abroad, given the rise in internet usage throughout Ireland and indeed the world itself. Our chief aim is to motivate youth and to encourage them to embrace republicanism, as well as educated those abroad who are curious about the occupation that exists.

What kind of media do you broadcast?
Our main broadcasts are republican in nature, past present and future, with a selection of international videos also. We produce videos about the troubles, with footage from the period, and other videos about past rebellions. We also produce videos on republican prisoners throughout Ireland.

Do you see FDM videos on TV?
No. Due to the evident anti-republican bias on the TV in general, we are internet based. The page is alive and well and has clocked up over 100,000 on it's selection of videos. We are currently in the process of making a full DVD that will be distributed throughout the world.
Our broadcast's are based on YouTube, due to the worldwide and nationwide popularity of the video site. Our videos are very popular and we ask the public to subscribe to us.

Do you attract a wide audience? From the world over?
Yes, this is why we are based on YouTube. Due to the popularity it is important that the world see's what Ireland has endured over the last 800 centuries.

Does it take up much of your personal time?
Quite a lot. FDM did not get as much attention throughout the last few month's but due to the rise of Republicanism on websites such as IrishRepublican.net, we have been overwhelmed with support and visits. We hope with this rise in support, that FDM will go from strength to strength.

What do you think of the current state of republicanism?
Republicanism has been dealt a serious blow in the past year. But there has been light shown in the past few months. We hope that this progresses, we also believe that our principles cannot be divided for Stormont or the RUC. Our position is very clear on this.

Are these videos still relevant? Why?
it is important that we promote our culture worldwide. We belleve as irish republicans our videos are as relevant as ever today because of the current state of affairs and the rubble republicanism has been left in. There is still a nescessity for videos on republican prisoners, the IRA, the easter rising and videos as such.

I'm just curious as to why republicans insist on hammering out the paramilitary chic imagery. Is it a fetish thing?

Is uploading a few picture slideshows accompanied by Wolfe Tones music to YouTube really that much of a feat for FDM?

Siobhan dont let this guy get you upset, actual Republicans ( you know those that support Republicanism, not those in the gerry adams fanclub) fully support preserving the national treasure that is Tara and say well done to Tarawatch and others who have worked so diligently in this matter. Republican Sin Feins monthly paper "Saoirse" and its weekly email newslist have given the situation very good coverage and I have meet quite a few members a demos in support. I have been quite impressed with their support.

Hi !

I would like to disassociate myself from any inference that true Irish republicans are not concerned with the on-going attempted destruction of the Tara heritage site - speaking as a member of RSF , I can state that the Tara issue ( and 'Shell2Sea' , amongst other State disgraces) are indeed , as stated above , covered in our monthly newspaper on a regular basis , as they should be , and are discussed at our meetings .

We have taken part in demonstrations in support of both of the above-mentioned issues and will continue to do so . I am puzzled and saddened by the dismissive comments in other posts on this thread.

Thanks ,

Sharon .
