The Eve Of All-Ireland Rally held yesterday (Saturday 15th) in Dublin was forming-up at approximately 1.30pm at the gates of the Garden Of Remembrance when a Garda Superintendent and three of his uniformed colleagues approached the RSF Stewards and asked them what was going on : the four Gardai were told that , as advertised , a parade would shortly be leaving from that spot to make its way to the GPO for the annual Eve Of All-Ireland Rally .
The Superintendent replied that that would not be allowed , as those gathered at the gates constituted "an illegal assembly" and it would not be 'permitted' that they be allowed to form "an illegal parade" with the intention of parading to join a second "illegal assembly" at the GPO ! Twenty minutes was spent in 'discussions' between the Gardai and the Stewards before the latter instructed the parade to form-up and guided them on to the street , and then led the group down onto O' Connell Street , where the Piper and the Colour Party - comprising representatives of Cumann Na mBan and Dublin RSF members - was placed on the traffic isle facing the GPO pillars .
Meanwhile , those assembling the small stage unit , lectern , amplification etc , at the Jim Larkin memorial statue near the GPO , had also been approached by uniformed Gardai (shadowed by two male and one female Special Branch members) and the "illegal assembly" line was similarly delivered - and , after some 'discussion' , similarly by-passed . The Garda Superintendent vowed that , in future , such "illegal assemblies" would not be tolerated and promised that there would be no 'discussions' held regarding the matter .
Howerer - the Rally was held as intended : it was Chaired by Joe O' Neill (Donegal) , and the main speakers were Des Dalton (Kildare) , Pat Quirke (Kerry) and Richard Walsh (Derry) . A full report will be carried in the October 2007 issue of 'SAOIRSE' (available from the 3rd of that month).
Thanks !
Sharon.
