Rugadh Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa i mBéal Átha Fhinín i gCo. Chorcaí i 1947. Garda as Co. Fhear Manach ba ea a athair Peter Ferguson. D’fhreastail sé ar Choláiste Bhréanainn, Cill Airne, agus ina dhiaidh sin ar Choláiste Phádraig, Droim Conrach, mar ar cháiligh sé mar oide bunscoile. Bhain sé céim BA amach i gColáiste na hOllscoile, Baile Átha Cliath, i 1970 i nGaeilge, Stair agus Fealsúnacht.

An bhliain dár gcionn rinne sé an tArd-Teastas san Oideachas i gColáiste na Tríonóide. Ba bhunmhúinteoir é go dtí 1975 nuair a d’aistrigh sé go dtí Meánscoil an Leith-Triúigh, Co. Chiarraí. Tá a dhúthracht caite aige ag cur na Gaeilge chun cinn. Bhunaigh sé Scoil Lán-Ghaeilge Mhic Easmainn i dTrá Lí i 1978.
