Today, Polish group of Independent Workers Union picketed "Gospoda Polska" restaurant in Chapel Street, Dublin for several hours.
Background:
Martha came to Dublin to earn money for another year of her studies. She found a job in GOSPODA POLSKA (POLISH INN) in Capel Street. After 10 hours of work as a kitchen porter she was told that it was a mock day and the company will not pay for it. The manager told Martha that she would give her a call to let her know whether they are going to keep her or not in the restaurant. Finally, she received no respond from them.
After a couple of days, Martha asked for her remuneration, and amazingly it turned out, that the manager could not recall who Martha actually was. Then she asked Independent Workers Union for help. Despite a union representative intervened, the management of POLISH RESTAURANT still does not notice anything wrong about their activity and refuses to pay for work.
Martha is not the only person treated like that. POLISH RESTAURANT deliberately cuts its costs, and pays nothing to naive young people who do not know Irish Labour Law and cannot defend theirselves.
In effect of the action, the pay will be paid till next Thursday.

tell them, what do you think about !
Not a mention for the Gardai that arrived and mediated at this resulting in the stand off being resolved in favour of the worker.
Wow well done to all involved. It's great to see a victory, however small, for once.
All decent people, regardless of Political or class ideology should support these workers, wrong is wrong is wrong!!!
It's great to see solidarity in action.
How did Martha contact the IWU?
Following an unfair dismissal from my job at a restaurant I decided to take action against my employer. I emailed the IWU back in March looking for advice as I was to appear at the Employment Appeals Tribunal the next month. Unfortunately I never heard from them.
After contacting a number of different organisations I received solid advice from Tom Fitzgerald who works with BATU on Blessington st, Dublin 1 (despite the fact that I was employed in catering and he represents Building and Trade workers).
Apologies that nobody got back to you.
The old email address is still up on our website which may explain the problem, we will get that changed.
New contact email for the Dublin branch of the IWU is iwusoreilly@eircom.net, office tel is 01-8197731.
Or, you can contact me at eoghanryan@yahoo.com or 086 3686590
