Dan will be going to prison, I am afraid. He knows that ,as he signed the bail conditons under
protest. Support will be needed at the courts. Unlike Rossport this is not an open-ended contempt
order;but a criminal charge and the judge (unfortunately) fails in the humour department.
Someone should report on sentencing etc and put it up here.

Culture, history, and greed.

In the 1960's I recall visits to Dublin, and the plans for the New Road....the proposed motorway that would be found in the wee North and the UK and praised endlessly for efficient travel. Note only two decades earlier, the efficient train service to Dublin via local villages was deemed inefficient and without profit and closed down.

Now 2007 and what have we learnt from experience?..... Surely, in the intervening decades, those involved in the design of the motorway, could have found alternative routes and avoid destruction Tara/Skryne's ancient heritage......a heritage appreciated in times of yore by people like Maud Gonne McBride, Arthur Griffith, Douglas Hyde, add to this the people who dedicated interest to the local heritage like Michael Slevin, Mrs. Elizabeth Hickey, a stalworth in archaeology, Dr. Alice Murnane and so many other people with vision.

Note I say the people with vision versus those with financial vested interests in the destruction of our historic sites. My grandfather, a Judge, had a saying 'beware of the vested interest' and I feel driven to refer to it now as I feel at an intuitive level that what is happening to Tara, to Skryne, to Garlow Cross area, and to Soldier Hill is so blatantly immoral. How is that those with power to destroy history can forsake of heritage..... National Development funds from Europe, planning power, developers have made people lazy and profit has become the order of the day.

Meath unlike the west was never well endowed with tourist attractions and yet the potential of Tara - the history of the Druids and pagan Ireland in a world of pain is being removed with the swipe of a pen and bureaucracy without heart. Would the English people destroy Stone Henge for a motorway going right through it? I don't think so.

Living in the Dispensary Residence in the 1960's, my brother and myself, the corgi and the Basset Hound would stroll down the avenue to look at the CIE bus with all the American tourists.....Being children, we would wonder why they would come from America to Tara and for what. Now, in retrospect, education, interest in history and archaelogy and not many places to visit on the East Coast back then - they were the people with vision! I wonder what they would think of the 'Rape and Pillage' of our Irish culture now - the Five Roads to Tara - the High Kings of Ireland - St. Patrick.

Solder Hill - does anyone ask about the history here? I recall as a small child that piece of road, climbing with a bend to Garlow Cross, being the scene of many fatal road accidents.......it may be a pisheog, but maybe someone else has a view........The name Soldier Hill most likely related to a time of earlier battles, one of which was a scene of great hardship. It was intuitive in some of the older people that the RTA's and the many deaths reflected what could be described as a 'curse'.

Well done Danny. Well done to all who feel passionate about history, culture, druidism. I lived in an African country, what I recall most is virtually no real history.......just people migrating and legend of battles lost......

Lovely message Michelle. Two points of clarification, Michael Slavin has been on radio twice defending this road, indeed rumour has it that he even provided an affidavit for the court case for the NRA.
Soldier Hill is named for the last battle of the men of '98 in that area and they were hung on a road behind, hangman's mile, that will also disappear under concrete if this route goes ahead.
It is not only ancient history but much more recent history that will disappear.

With all those in mind who now have to defend themselves in court (regarding recent M3 issues), there are some useful insights in the article at the address provided below which outline how, over a long period, so many people in Ireland (and elsewhere) have been hoodwinked into believing despotism is democracy.

According to this article, it would appear that "trial by jury" would be an absolute must - if those now facing trial are to stand ANY chance at all of receiving justice through our courts.

Otherwise, and assuming I've understood the arguments set out in the article correctly, it will be "trial by judge" - where the judge/s in question will be vigorously acting on behalf of a government that is hell-bent on bringing statist policies to fruition in connection with the planned M3 toll road.

For those not familial with the term "statist", it basically refers to the use of political and legal policies and tactics which are designed to put individuals and communities into a relatively very weak position (and keep them there!!): compared to that of the government.

I have known Michael Slevin since the 1960's but due to personal illness from Chronic fatigue and neurological problems, I have been housebound for years and out of communication apart from Indymedia and a few good people.

Yes, I can recall something about Soldier Hill and the history you have provided about 1798 and men being hanged......in the turmoil of a fight for freedom.

Interestingly, Kevin just brought me a few magazines to read. Ireland's Own. The book on Fr. Murphy, Wexford's 1798 hero is advertised. The first verse of the stirring Boolavogue P.J. McCall ballad is sure passionate.

Any chance Meath has a hidden history of the victims of 1798.......Perhaps not, it was the mainstay of the Pale therefully Tara should be a cultural and historical priority to redress the balance and a comemoration to those who died on Soldier Hill in 1798 and thereafter.

The Celtic Twilight is an essential part of Irish history. Many writers like William Butler Yeats, Maud Gonne, Lady Gregory, Bean Sile deValera had a profound interesst in Fairy culture, the folklore that ebbed and flowed in an Ireland ruled by Colonial power. The stories of changelings were to be heard from the old people in the 1960's.....This too is history, the oral history that may be lost but then who knows!

Well with censorship of the media, radio and tv. Even this site I have noticed, there is not much chance to distract the minds of the people from the fairy tale land of being rich and famous to bother their asses and do something. Sure come round next election we'll all be using those trust worthy computers that Fianna Fail are going to be telling us how great they are over the next years. Oh also how good it will be to vote Yes to the eupropean constitution, Im sure they'll be ramming that down our necks too. The one thing that hundreds of years of foreign occupation didnt destroy, is good owl trad and folk music. But now a new day is dawing. I cant remember the last time I heard a song on the radio or even in a pub, well there is a few places, where someone actually uses the verse and chord to speak about serious problems facing this country and the world. They seem to be a dying breed now. or maybe not, theyre not givin the chance. I wonder why, is it because the words can make you think?? I give my praize to Damien Dempsey, keep it going. Chrisy Moore, Andy irvine, R.I.P. Tommy Makem... Theres many more but thats to name a few... And Bono your not on the list...

Bit off topic - sorry!

There is a plaque on the wall of an outhouse attached to Caffreys pub in Batterstown, Co Meath, that simply reads "1798". Is this a reference to our heroes of the 1798 rebellion? I like to think it is, and it stirs my blood every time I drive by it. As significant as the 1916 rebellion was, for me the insurrections of 1798 and 1803 are more fascinating. A time when Protestant and Catholic united to gain Irish independence and Catholic emancipation (granted there was a certain amount of sectarian killings).

A good book on the subject is "The Year of Freedom" by Thomas Pakenham. Well worth a read!

No one is saying forget the past, by all means commemorate when appropriate, but get that chip off your shoulder, the peace process is here to stay and long may it continue

The topic is the sell out of Tara and the destruction of our heritage, get back to the real issues, anyone with appreciation for Irelands past has read Thomas Packenhams 'The Year Of Freedom' A lot of what he writes is well written, but from a one sided perspective, I suggest you look at more up to date accounts.

News is coming in of more destruction on the Rath Lugh area, construction workers have removed more earth at the esker side and the boundary at that point is unclear.
News is that excavation of the henge will begin Tuesday morning. This agrees with the committee's recommendations that the henge is to be preserved by record.
The excavations are said to take 3 months, 12 weeks according to the committee minutes - they can be found at

I will talk about what I want to talk about. Tara and Meath are significant to the events of 1798. I did not say "The Year of Freedom" was the definitive work on 1798 insurrection. I did not mention the situation in the north. So I don't know what you are going on about.

This evening as I speak , my stomach churns to see corruption again raise its ugly head in Berties 'Tent'. The gobshite Callely is back for a stint in the Seanad before he goes into the wilderness the next time around.
I wonder who will paint and decorate his house this year. Will it be a friend of Paddy the Plasterer or Mick the Slip? Somebody asked Ivor recently, in North Dublin, his views on Tara and his pathetic reply was - 'I wonder is their much money in Tara Mining yet!!!

Now on a serious note - Tara is the nucleus of our architectural heritage and of our glorious past both in its beauty and folklore. In order to explain the strength of the relationship of religion and nationality in Ireland, it is necessary to go back many centuries. The roots of Christianity in Ireland can be traced to the arrival of St. Patrick in 432. The previously pagan Irish people threw themselves into the new religion with a passion that few, if any, other countries have been able to rival. The power of Christianity transformed the Gaelic culture and the pagan rites of Ireland were eventually driven out of Ireland completely. St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland is commemorated by a giant statute on the hills of Ireland.

Most famous of all works from this period also is the glorious Book of Kells - this is also associated with the Royal County. A 19th century scholar of this remarkable illuminated manuscript described it as the most beautiful book in the world.

Tara must be saved and the Irish people must be awakened to its culture and above all their roots of Christian faith because as Kevin Myers said on Radio 1, a few mornings ago, if we don't wake up we will have a serious crisis on our hands to preserve our culture and our freedom. It was the first time in my life I ever agreed with Myers.

Now I am going to jump to 1925 - it is an extract from William Butler Yeats' speeches in the first Seanad.

From this Seanad speech of 1925 Col. Moore 'I am not satisfied with the Minister's statement - it has to be done with the consent of the owner. I remember a few years ago when a certain person owned Tara and certain people came over from England and they said - the Ark of the Covenant was at Tara. They proceeded to dig up the whole place. There were protests then from a large group of people - some of them friends of mine, Yeats said. Arthur Griffith came to Tara and protested but it was no use. The farmer said he was paid to do it and he intended to do it. There was much damage done to Tara - I would like something to be done to unreasonable men of that kind, Yeats said and so prevent them from destroying ancient monuments. Yeats went on - 'We stopped that man - I proudly was on that expedition.

Now back to the present times sadly. Tonight I ask the Green 'gobshites', Gormley and Ryan; Bertie the USDollar magician gave both of you the two portfolios you yearned for in the cradle but sadly it took Louis Copeland to dress you in the Emperor's Clothes. Tara has the city of Dublin on its doorstep with a population of over one million people, methinks you would be lucky to find a tenth of the people having any interest in what is going on in Tara Valley.

Of that tenth 100,000 you would be hard pressed to find more than 1% or so individuals (1,000) willing to raise a finger in support.

So how many Dubs are out there actually protesting twenty at the most out of one million?

It was the same with The Glen of the Downs, people of Dublin with one third of the countries population cannot be bothered!

Sadly the road will go through and other similar sites in Ireland will be lost, Because basically the population of this island don't give a damn for their heritage.....

To further clarify:
The committee on Lismullin agreed that the monument would disappear anyway due to its deteriorating condition.
It is being protected from the water by sand bags, it is located in a dip and was becoming badly waterlogged.
Therefore, excavation will begin, with their consent and at their recommendation, on Tuesday morning. As some doubts have been expressed about the reliability of this information, I want to emphasise that I have this from THE most reliable source. There was a very long meeting on the issue on Thursday. Minutes of the older meetings here as I posted before.

It is the Rath Lugh situation that is of serious concern. I understand that even the section that we were standing on on Monday has now been taken away.
The NRA are now disputing the exact location of the monument so the exact extent of the roadtake is unclear. We will be looking at further evidence of what is going on today and we will post that up when we have more information.

Your comment about Lismullen Committee interest me. In my time living in Tara/Skryne 1970's, I recall that Lismullen House, formerly the home of the Dillon Family, was bought by Opus Dei. Is the committee, an Opus Dei committee, based on ownership of the lands in question?????????

Did anyone know that early in 1970 The Grand Lodge wrote to a Belfast private lodge, St. Mary's Temperance Lodge 1303, giving it it permission to alter its name to Irish Heritage LOL 1303 - however let us note
'The new name was indicative of the views of the Lodge membership, who believed that the entire island should be won back to Protestantism and that the pre-Twelfth century Irish Church (which, it felt, had been contaminated with Popery) should be re-established' - these formed part of an assortment of views not necessarily held by Orangemen.

Other views included the belief that Irish Protestants had a Gaelic heritage but the political circumstances of the time, put them in a position of retreat but at this time, it was mooted they should reclaim their Gaelic heritage.

In the 1960's, Mr. McGrath senses friction in the North of Ireland pot and he formed a secret Loyalist organisation called 'Tara'
NB 'After the site of the of the palace of the old Gaelic Kings, in County Meath). This took on a paramilitary characted and attracted a number of figures who became prominent in Politics. Many unionists apparently flocked to Tara. The organisation provided a template for Orange hard-line views, with a secret army run by paisleyites and hardline unionists at the time. There were many legalised guns authorised by the RUC which was the protestant Irish army at the time.

There is an interesting letter in the Belfast News Letter - June 20th 1974

....we address ourselves to those who wish to preserve for ALL THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND, the heritage of faith and freedom that had almost being extinguished in a large part of our land and which is now threatened with extinction in the North East corner of Ulster. The aim of the enemy is the destruction of our Irish faith.......

Well 2007 is the year of change......Peace reigns and Tara; the heritage, the history, the High Kings of Tara; Tara Hall and the poetry by Thomas More; the maguires, the Devines and other families that have lived for well over 100 years and kept the history alive by personal interaction with people.

A gesture perhaps is appropriate, awareness is crucial to enshrine the valleys, the mounds, the druidic pre Christian history.

I note Willie Frasier and others from the North have decided on a return visit to Dublin City inspite of the attacks sustained last year.
If Mr Frasier can gather up to 500 people to march through O'Connell Street which is completely idiotic after last years events. This cost the state millions of euros. Surely to God, united now, we can gather as a people together to preserve one of the greatest gifts which history has laid upon us. Let's get thinking and acting?

As this is the year of Peace and Tara is Tara would we not invite them to Tara and then maybe the people in the North would support us to see the preservation of our history.........

The committee on Lismullin is the one that John Gormley put together to advise him on what happens to the National Monument, the henge, at Lismullin. As you may know, this is the name of the townland in that area.
The house you speak of is indeed in Opus Dei ownership still and is used as a conference centre.
The henge is quite close to the house.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I had thought Opus Dei were in someway connected. I am aware of their organisation i.e. as distinct from the Da Vinci Code and author Mr. Browne. I note their web site is now most transparent in the United States and I would suggest a visit to anyone keen on the Preservation of Tara/Skryne/Gabhran Valley/Lismullen.

AM I spent two hours writing a reply to Roestown posting. I saved it on the HTML screen but it was extinguished while the other articles remained.......I have no record and have written to Indymedia about this.

I forwarded these postings to a variety of sites and have had very positive feedback from people in New York, US, Australia, Europe.

One person thanked me for forwarding on website details and said they would never have found the details and now were proactive and grateful.

Again - my article which had taken two hours to write (disabilities make it hard for me to write) was removed from the screen a.m. Is there a reason?

Protection of the Rights of the People of Ireland
you must learn all about trying to cope with the neurons that mis-fire in the Brain.

Tara, when we arrived to the Dispensary House - Belper in 1963, on the Road to Tara ...... to the Five Roads and the myth that led to Tara.....this provided a playground to my youth. In the 1960's, the social history was very different, as so many people will tell you .... that is if people care to listen now. My father was appointed to the practice run by Dr. Murnane and his wife for many decades. There was a wealth of history discussed from mystical to yore to archaelogical potential of the vast unknown. Prior to the Independence of the State, the English among others sought evidence of the Ark of the Covenant.


My Cousin in Skryne, James Comyn QC, at that time, encouraged such an interest in our heritage. I enclose a quotation from his book in 1973 -Their Friends at Court when he writes about his precious Tara.

'In 1798 Daniel O'Connell (1775-1847) was called to the Bar. He went on to win fame as a lawyer and politician (the paradox), gaining CATHOLIC EMANCIPATION for his country and earning for himself the title of 'The Liberator'. As an Orator, whether to mass meeting or Jury, he had few equals. On one occasion he addressed a crowd of half a million from the Hill of Tara, and was heard by all without any need for amplification'

Tara - home of Catholic Emancipation - Daniel O'Connell. Why Tara? Then Why not?

Let's move to after the Easter Rising, the ideals of the Proclamation, the lives ruined and lost in the fight for Independence.. This time another man of note was appointed to the first Irish Senate to advise Government on matters relating to education, literature and the Arts.......Yes, a man involved wholeheartedly in the Celtic Twilight.. William Butler Yeats differed - he never was a violent man. He was a suitable man to contribute to the Senate at the time of the 1922 Constitution - another dimension that was vital. It was his play in 1904 - the renowned Cathleen NiHoulihan in April 1904 that stirred the hearts of many. It is said that one of the seven members of the IRB council which had planned the insurrection - confided that prior to this play, he was not a man of political thought.

Yeat's was a passionate nationalist - for all of his life. The human imagination to him went beyond boundaries.- he won a Nobel Litreature prize. He promoted strongly the use of the Gaelic language and made a stand against the censorship that sought to curb the creativity of the writers of the Celtic Twilight.

The Question raised at the time of Shannon Electricity Scheme in 1925 about what was to happen in the case of finding monuments. It was proposed that the Board of Works be consulted. Ironically, Col. Moore outlined Tara and its private ownership (circa the time people came to view the Arc of the Covenant suggestion). Digging and excavations occurred. And the people made a stand then including friends of Col. Moore......Arthur Griffith visited the location to lodge a protest also........It was mooted at that time to stop reckless behaviour by owners that would result in the destruction of National Monuments....in fact he refers to Ancient monuments.

I ask what happened? a United Ireland? Why is Tara in Meath different to say the Cliffs of Moher in Clare. Just imagine the significance of Stone Henge? Do we lack passion? Perhaps Meath has always been too plush....refined gentility but not enough power after Independence. Investment in hotels, large demesnes, ribbon development, appears to be more popular. Then of course Ireland had its own migration........The Land Commission people who received land on the East Coast.....maybe integration for a 'fight' is not yet nurtured - maybe there is a lack of confidence.

What do we need to do to preserve our ancient culture......to examine the sites relating to Tara, Gabran, Skryne - there are preople speaking and writing and engaging in multi-media that would swell in favour of history the merits of preservation of our history. Why is it that Corporatism appears to have the democratic power to change this in favour of greed, eco destruction - look at Mayo, again it is the Corporatism of Shell versus nature. In the West the people stand tall about nature and the land. But then it is from the West that the saying comes 'Castle's falling dung hills rising' (another century).

There are people not thinking because they are committed to other interests. I ask the GAA - what about your footprint? What is the cost to the environment on the basis of sport as the game, the pleasure principle, the promoters of the drink culture, the brand promotions culture...... why don't the Meath Team make a strike for nature, for history, in a thankful gesture to Peace in the year 2007.......Where is lateral thought in an economy that has supposedly moved to being a 'Knowledge Economy'. Oscar Wilde quote sums it up. Some people know the price of every thing and the value of nothing.

Strong word associations with Tara include The Liberator; The Ark of the Covenant, The Celtic Twilight, Lord Dunsany, Lord Fingal - Kileen Castle, Rathmaeve (again a mound on the road from Dunsany to Tara); Tara as in Orangeism, Ledwidge, the poet, Land Commission divide, Catholic Church in every parish with a view.......

I wonder has someone a view in the universe. Is physical presence that important to complete a task that can be done in a virtual way?

Architects/Engineers can unite by design to develop.......change the roads and resurrect he old railways that the British established. Ireland gained massive funds when they chose not to pay the land bonds i.e. on the take mentality existed...........the North has now gained funds and they are spending them wisely (i.e. if you are like me confined to the internet for exploration), the US contribution to the Peace Process is not mentioned too often!!!! and last but not least all those who emigrated and repatriated funds home.....and the support of their children to Ireland now.....

To me Tara has a haunting intuitive gift that captures the minds of people through the centuries.

Many years ago, I recall looking up to the Hills of Tara, knowing that the day following my Father would be buried there. As a general practitioner, he shared with me that inspirational status of Tara and we would walk up to the top of the Mound and look and see as far as we could see. In the 1970's the Northern Counties were the missing part of our nationalism but from Tara one believed that the North could be seen, making it part of a unique vision of the many of the counties of Ireland. There was a refreshment there. There was vision yet to happen.

Now blighted with much ill health, I know Dad is there with the view that changes with the climate and stirs the mind to peace. Or so I hope.
Acquired brain injury is about many deritiatives similar to sunset - energy is limited and all of a sudden the sun is out but if you go by nature - it is rest that restores for another few hours of interaction. It is the 'peace that comes dropping still' that is the positive side of ABI.

I lost short term memory so basically I see what I experience and the memories are back growing up in Tara and Skryne. There is a message often in the personal circumstances of people and I believe this

I see Tara much along the images and writings of Sarah Repasky. I recall the excellent photographs taken by artist Noreen Harte Walsh.......do we seriously want to lose any more of the details of this Ancient site - a place of pilgrimmage and exploration for generations of people. A place of hope and inspiratoin for a United Ireland.

I recall the efforts of Mrs. Hickey from Skryne Castle, the Rathfeigh Historical Society whose members wrote about the history of Tara. I recall Lord Dunsany's Father and I have an awareness of his writings. Dunsany Castle must have an archive . Then Fingal Castle; there must be signifcant archives stored. There was literary talent to be found back then. People were drawn to Tara - Lord Powerscourt built a house looking up to Tara, with the ruins of Tara Hall in its midst. His daughter Lady Langirshe and her family lived in Ringlestown, then there was the Preston family - a long heritage. Then beyond the the Royal Tara Golf Hall, existed Bellinter House (I forget the name of the family); then there was Ardsallagh House. Where is the social history that ought to be written soon........note athe density of basically Anglo Irish castles etc and this was on the 1970's. Let us look to the Columban Fathers at Dalgan for archives of history relating to Tata. I am surprised the Church remains so 'silent' about taking a view on Tara. Allegiances are allegiances when it comes to property, power and control of what is history?

Santayana: This quotation also appeals to me 'Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it' and Sarah this takes me back to your comments about Opus Dei and entities whos motives are about rewriting our ancient hisotry, in line with their need to deny their past..........

Who recalls the Tree where people tied ribbon to outside Dunsany Castle - it may be still there? What about the Fairy Trees in Tara?

What about the literary circle of earlier periods and their fascination with the Occult.

What about Soldier Hill - the men hanged and myths.....?

Bean De Valera wrote about this world of the unknown, the piseogs - I had her book as a child.....I must look for a copy.

I think some parts of this letter should line to the the Content from the Apology letter to An Taoiseach.

Where therre is a will there is a way - I hope we can chnage attitudes to the M3.

it is time to make contact with the Law From Commission and seek details of the newly proposed Triibunals. Let us hope something has been learn from those gone beffre - those that have run at a cost of Euros 170 milloin with Euro's 140 going to the legal profession.

Shame on us in this farce.

The Hutton Inquiry proved ire diliegent with set time boundaries and other limits.

Looking at the list of Tribunals to date, on aTara Watch letter, it is abysymal that we have made no seruious input into criminal behavuour.

I most certainly agree that where there is a will there is a way, and I know that joined together, the will of many will have the power to persuade.

You speak of the magick of Ireland, the mystery of the Island, the trees of the Fae and the burial places of our Ancestors, including your own dear Father. I, myself, have most likely seen his resting place in person. These are among the many reasons I protest the M-3 construction/destruction, and why my heart lies within the soil of the Island. My own husband and children know that when the time comes, I wish for my cremains to be placed in a secret place on the Hill, there to rest forever.

Plaque at Batterstown 1798 is memorial to rebels who were hanged in yard. Memorials to groups of rebels who died are all around Culmullin,Batterstown, Summerhill.

I am trying to find where Judge Comyn's house at Skyrne was located.Know it was burned and re-built.
