This is a great opportunity for all of us who care about Tara to make our voices heard, and to put a physical presence to all of those polls showing a majority of Irish people to be in favour of a reroute. I shall certainly be there, to show my love for my heritage.

Well done and a great title, there is a man wishes to contact the group, his area is transport and rail track utilisation. Not something NRA or Ahern with Patrick Pearse picture in his office will want to hear about never mind the breakfast roll building lobby.

I hope the organizers of this mass demo have put the work in to get as many people out in support of Tara as possible.
The 'mass' demo could backfire if only a small number of people turned up to protest.
I know time is of the esence in regard to saving Tara, but normally to organize a mass demo it takes a lot of time and hard work to make sure such an event is successful.

People directly involved in save Tara might automatically assume that everyone is following the Tara story on a daily basis.
I have been following the Tara issue and I only found out about it today Tues 17th July.

The organizers need to blitz the media and use all sources available to inform people, get onto the main radio shows that have the higest ratings.
People need notice if they have to travel up to Dublin from other parts of the country.
Gormely and the rest of the Greed Party need to be put under pressure by the very people that elected them.
If only a small number of protesters turn up, Gormely and his u-turn cronies might feel more relaxed about this issue, and continue to drag their heels instead of taking action.

I would suggest having it two weeks from now. Give people a chance to plan.
Buses could be organized from differant areas around the country etc.

Time wise, I think they are cutting it tight for a mass demo, I hope I'm wrong.

I will march whenever it is but I do agree with Pat. A poor turnout could do more damage than good. We need to raise awareness. The only reason I'm aware of the march is that I follow events. There are many people that would attend but won't know about the march until it is over. Need to get in the mainstream media, radio shows etc.

Anyway lets all turn out for whatever is organised.

Keep the faith!

Dead right both of you and now Shell2Sea have called a day of action on Saturday as well. That will take many activists away.
Perhaps postpone until later and get better coverage.
If I did not visit Indymedia I wouldn't have a clue about this march.

I heard something about the march on the radio earlier, so it seems to have hit the mainstreams. I don't think they should postpone, it's been up here longer than the Shell2Sea demo. I would go to that, but I'm going to make a last stand for Tara.

...all round !

Hi !

That same Saturday (21 July) also plays host to the annual Pat Cannon Commemoration at Balgriffin Cemetery (off the Malahide Road) in Dublin , which is where most , if not all , the remaining RSF supporters/members in Dublin will be . The Commemoration starts at 1pm , so it is unlikely that we could make it back to Dublin city centre in time for the 'Save Tara' march .
Plus - we had already 'divided our troops' by sending a delegation to Gorey , Wexford , that same day to assist in a political status picket which is being held at the 1798 Memorial , starting at 1pm .
We may yet have to 'sub-divide' !

Sharon.

Could one of the organizers please comment on this subject.
I think if a mass protest is going to take place it must be given time to happen.

Like jucy bone, I heard about this through indymedia.
I live in a rual area, but last saturday I was in Sligo Town, normally if a protest march was coming up, I'd see posters giving time date etc. I did not see a anything about this planned march next Saturday.
Every major town in Ireland should have been Blized with posters and leflets handed out at least two weeks before any major march or protest rally.

Even post pone it for one week, so it does not clash with shell, or SF commems.
I would have gone to Rossport if the Tara March was not taking place.
Now Rossport will be down on numbers because of Tara, and Tara will be down on numbers because of Rossport.
I know time is a massive issue here, but such events as a mass demo's or protests could be more coordinated, so they do not overlap with other protests.

The Government is determined to push this road through at all cost
(with the assistance of the Greed Party)
The whole Tarra issue could hang on this March, its important to get it right.
If people do not come out on a mass scale, we are giving them the green light to destroy Tara Valley.
They (the Gove) would love nothing better than just a handful of people turn up on Sat, and write them off as a small group of crack pots.

IF TARA IS NOT WORTH SAVING< WHAT IS ?
Regardless of when the march is on, I'll be there. Good luck to us all.

As far as I know this march is being organised by TaraWatch, who for their own reasons refuse to engage with the other groups who are campaigning against the M3.

It's obviously a bad idea to arrange a protest march at short notice, and it's also poor tactics to try to organise any sort of mass demonstration without referring to other groups or political parties who support you.

author by Elaine O'Sullivanpublication date Fri Jul 20, 2007 15:29author address author phone Report this post to the editors

when four men are in jail for trying to protect our heritage. It wasn't called at short notice either, having been posted on Thursday 12th July. It is the perfect opportunity to show our support for all the groups and individuals who are trying to stop the destruction at Tara, particularly those who have gone to jail for their efforts. I can't imagine why anyone who is seriously concerned about protecting our heritage would try to discourage others from protesting its destruction.
Unless their hatred for certain members of TaraWatch outweighs their concern for Tara? Or perhaps it's another agenda? Whichever, we don't have time for this divisive nonsense. Get out and protest.

author by Short Noticepublication date Fri Jul 20, 2007 15:45author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Many people would regard nine or ten days (12th to the 21st) as short notice in terms of trying to organise a protest march in a capital city.

People have lives, and although they would want to express support, it's silly to think they should drop everything.

Other events like the Patrick Cannon Commemoration are being held on the same day.

Sadly, the corporate media, who are looking for excuses to attack the campaign aginst the M3, will equate a low turnout with a lack of support, which is not the case.

A more thoughtful organised approach to a mass demonstration in Dublin would have worked wonders, but the people who called this seemingly don't care about winning, just making sure that they get their pictures in the paper.

Elaine O'Sullivan, you are missing the point completly.
The only people I am against is the people who want to destroy Tara.
Your emotionly charged comments dont help this issue.
I am not trying to discourage anyone, if you read my post correctly you'd see that I said I would go to the march this Saturday if its not postponed.
I am not part of any group or organization.
Divide and rule is at play here. If a mass demonstration is planned it must be organized right.
I think the average person does not give a shit about Tara, but the ones who do and live in the real world have to make time for such events.
IT should have been given more time.
I have said already that if small numbers turn out because of short timing notice, the protest could backfire.
this could be a nail in the coffin of the Tara issue.
Running around like a headless chicken will not save Tara.
And do not judge people on how much they did compared to someone in jail.
Every bit of support helps,

Hi !

For what it's worth (ie without appearing to be presumptuous regarding RSF's part in tomorrows 'Love Tara' march) we have re-organised as best we could and will have a presence at same .
Our number will not be as many as it would have been on a different date and our usual banners will be absent , as they have already been sent to two other venues , but we will have a few people present .

Hoping for a good turnout !

I'll be there. We're comin down from Bangor, Co Down. This is too important an event to miss. The Irish Government must listen to the people. Hurting our heritage is just plain wrong. Our children's children will never forgive us if we stand idly by and allow a road to tear up the Tara/Skryne valley.
Peaceful protest is the only answer.

I went to the "Save Wood Quay" march with my father as a child. The turnout was unbelievable and all the thousands of Marchers felt that the Gov surely not ignore such a public outcry. However thats exactly what they did. I dont know what effect our March will have, with so many vested interests at work, probably none.
But, I will say this much, Gormley has been summonded to appear and defend his relutance to act at the European court of Justice end of August, and we will be summiting evidence. Thanks to all who have helped Tara in her Hour of need. WE WILL WIN THIS FIGHT.

I hope there will be a good turn out for the 'Love Tara' demonstration. It is extremely important that we protect this Ancient Irish site and its environs from obliteration. If further destruction happens at the site, we will never uncover the secrets of our past and archaeological artefacts that remain at the site will be damaged or lost to Ireland forever, and Ireland will be archaeologically and culturally poorer as a result (and pollution enriched courtesy of the M3).

Future generations will look back aghast and resent us and never forgive us for not taking action now and protecting this Ancient Irish site which was up until the invasion of Ireland by Anglo-Normans the most powerful and influential place both politically and religiously on the island.

It is in the interest of everyone in Ireland and the Irish abroad and those throughout Europe who are archaeological interested in the site and who care about protecting our national heritage to demonstrate their support for Tara.

I will see ye all later today at the 'Love Tara' demonstration where we will all demonstrate our abhorrence for the destruction occurring at Tara.

What did the various speakers call for the Save Tara campaign to do next. I'm particularly interested in what Richard Boyd Barrett (SWP), Sinn Fein and Republican Sinn Fein advocated as tactics for the movement. I could not make it to Dublin yesterday so it would be great if a summary of speeches could be put up.

Hi Aventis !

The RSF people present at the event yesterday were there as supporters and , as such , were not expecting to have time on the microphone , nor were they authorised to do so on behalf of the Dublin Comhairle Ceantair or the organisation as a whole . I know from various RSF meetings where the issue of Tara has been raised that there is continuing support for the present policy of marches , pickets , protests etc , as the alternative (ie to do nothing but acquiesce) is unthinkable .

There were over one Thousand people there, I do not know all of them by name. Which is why I thanked EVERYONE who attended. I do not take lightly to being accused of favouritism.

Kathy Sinnot was expected to speak ,but didnt bother to show up, so instead a letter sent from her to John Gormley was read out by a TaraWatch Member. No sign of any Labour Party Members either despite the fact that I had rang them several times to let them know about the March.

However, they were only very small setbacks and didnt spoil the jubliant atmosphere of the March. Thanks to Sharon for including it on her Blog, and once again, to all who gave their time and goodwill to the Event

Can someone clarify.... was there someone there that actually claims to be the High King of Ireland? Or was it some kind of joke or costume. Apologises if my last post re RSF's position on the Tara issue was not clear enough for you : I can only suggest that you refer to our monthly newspaper , 'Saoirse' , for more information . For instance , the May 2007 issue - 'Pro-Tara group outlines election strategy' (page 3) ; June 2007 issue - 'NGA call for M3 to be rerouted' (page 5) ; and/or this months issue - 'Destruction of Tara continues' (page 3) . They are but the most recent examples , and that issue receives the coverage it does because it is considered a serious issue deserving of coverage .

I hope that is clear enough for you ?

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I think it was a very poor turn out last Saturday.
I was verbally attacked last week by Elaine O'Sullivan for suggesting that the march be postponed, because I believed the march was announced at such short notice.
I was at the march and as I expected it was hardly what you would call 'A mass demonstration'
as was adevtised on Indymedia.
Fair play to all who turned up, but I think a lot more people would have turned out if it had been given more time and was better organized.
I drove over from the West of Ireland for the march, I parked my car on the south side of the city and walked to the Garden of Rememberance. The only posters/flyers i seen where a half dozen pasted up in O'Connell St.
Last Saturday's turn out was shamful.
I dont support RSF, But I salute them for attending the march.
There where so many people and organizations missing.
Where was the Trade Unions ?
Where was the Greed Party ?
Where was the soldiers of destiny who paraded around O'Connell St last year for the 90th anversary.
Where was all the other mouth warriors and guardians of Irish history.
Why was Sinn Fein not there ?
They caused uproar at an auction last year when historical artifacts whent up for sale.
Their noisey mantra then was 'IRISH HISTORY IS NOT FOR SALE'
Rember Wood Quay
Rember the tax marches
More recently the anti war marches.
The last one I was at in Dublin, over a hundred thousand took part.
As far as I am concerned, Tara is a hugh issue of great importance.
Siobhan says 'lets keep the pressure up' a1000 people is hardly pressure
The Irish peoplehave always been passionate about history.
They tend to be like a dormant volcano. There has always been a spark that can turn into a raging fire if fanned correctly and at the right time. 1916 is just one example. At the beginning they had virtually no support, but the mood changed over night.
I feel that the mass support for Tara is there, We just have not tapped into it yet.

Chuig: Siobhán,

I regret to inform you that you share something in common with your Taoiseach - neither of you possess diplomatic skills. Mr. Ahern is no fool though, he may not possess diplomatic skills, but he knows the value of them, and so he employs people who do, and they write the scripts for his oh so diplomatic Leinster House/Westminster speeches. It is only when he stupidly digresses from those diplomatic scripts does he lose his footing and is revealed for the blundering ignoramus that he is. I would never call anyone who made such an insensitive remark such as, 'he doesn't know why people who disagree or criticise the economy don't commit suicide' (in a county with a high suicide rate), a great diplomat! Mr. Ahern is nothing more than a very peculiar class of an accountant who doesn't believe in any accounting system when it comes to his own personal finances, his political party, nor indeed to issues of great importance with regard to preserving Ireland's national heritage!

Siobhán, we are all on the same side, and we are all grateful to you and TaraWatch for the very important work you are doing highlighting the destructive work taking place at Tara and informing us all of future protests, which we will all eagerly support, ach, maybe, leave the public relations bit to someone else.
