Succesful blockade of Shell HQ in Dublin

category dublin | environment | news report author Friday May 18, 2007 10:09author by Joe

Dublin Shell to Sea escalated its campaign against Shell’s command centre at Corrib house on Leeson Street with a blockade of all three entrances. After two hours only four Shell employees had been pushed through the blockade by the large force of Gardai on hand.

The action was called to "highlight the incredible theft of our natural resources that totals 51 billion euros in the Corrib field alone" while "each winter, up to 3,000 people die prematurely every year from fuel poverty". Upwards of 45 protesters had assembled with Shell being protected by around 30 Gardai and a number of private security.

Gardai were for the most part well behaved but one Guard probably keen to impress his mates grabbed a protester by the testicles! At one point Shell rewarded the Gardai with small cartoons of orange juice but no doubt they'll try and write that off against tax.

The cartons of orange juice add a nicely surreal touch for the whole thing...did they get free toys as well?

They've been quietly working away there for far too long.

Well done too all that turned out for it.

Also, for those interested, tickets are on sale in Connolly Books for the Rossport Solidarity Camps June Bank Holiday weekend event. The bus will leave at 6:30pm on Friday the 1st.
Workshops and events are being put on by Shell To Sea groups rom around the country and also by other community campaigns on Ireland.
It has a history of being an brilliant event (and sunshine always seems to put in a good showing)
so if you can make it down it won't disappoint.

Well done folks, and glad to hear no arrests or serious injuries.

P.S. I thought it was against Garda policy for them to take food or water for free from anyone.

It does seem to slightly contravene their whole impartiality thing doesn't it? I'd imagine the Gardaí are forbidden from taking ANY gifts from anyone for that simple reason....on the other hand maybe if we spring for some Yop's they'll switch sides and join our blockades instead...now that's the kind of bribery we can afford..

Finally the photos from today - as you will note this was for the most part calmer than last time, mostly as the decision was taken very early on by the Gardai to turn all Shell cars away

I heard that some Shell to Sea folks got close to Bertie in Cork today - one seemed to grab his hand or perhaps it was Bertie putting his exhausted hand out for another shake and found a Shell to Sea-er on the other end. Any reports or photos?

Well done to the people at Shell HQ too by the way.

Another great action in the capital, and more good news from Cork as well. Many thanks from the stubborn folk in Mayo.

Let's keep up the pressure, they'll soon learn there's nowhere to hide.

Why all the aggro? If you have the people behind you, you'll be the government in few days. Then you can do what you want, legally and without all this hassle. Can't you wait a little more.

In a perfect world, you'd be right. But with all the misinformation about the campaign it's going to be tough.

"The action was called to "highlight the incredible theft of our natural resources"

And who is going to find, process, GET ASHORE SAFELY, distribute this natural resource??

Last I heard, the "Shinners" didn't have "oil and gas exploration" on their election manifest - unless of course they've opened a Tehran office, or maybe even a Caracas Cumman -- seeing as they're down in that neck of the woods anyway.

author by R. Isiblepublication date Mon May 21, 2007 18:42author address author phone

I think the aggro is a result of the intoxicating effect that orange juice has upon Gardai. It's a little-known fact, but one that's worth paying attention to and it's why the Gardai at Belmullet have to quench their thirst with Guinness instead.

I don't understand why you are protesting about the great gas givaway outside Shell. Surely you should be focusing your attention on the people who gave it away (i.e. the Government) as opposed to the people who got it.

What's the purpose of protesting outside Shell's offices? What are you trying to achieve? I'm just curious, I'm not having a go at anyone.

Curious,

This ranting and raving about the so called gas giveaway, and the terminal development are nothing but diversionary tactics which have been used solely by certain members of the shell to sea campaign group to further their own profile with in the public arena.
Why would a campaign grouping change its articulate spokesperson of past 2 years?
Why has your so called pet TD gone in to hibernation and that was well before an election was called.
