Galway Cosantoiri Siochana : "Ireland's complicity in US war crimes is THE election issue?

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Thursday May 17, 2007 16:59author by TD - Cosantoiri Siochana Report this post to the editors

“Peace activists are still liable to arrest at Shannon for exposing the truth, but the CIA are free to use the airport for torture rendition flights" (anti-war activist, Conor Cregan)

Outraged but not surprised at, what amounts to a mainstream media/political parties cosy conspirancy not to make Ireland's aiding and abetting of the attack on Iraq an electoral issue, two anti-war activists, early today, took to Galway's streets to say our piece through paint brushes and the ad-busting of Ahern's election placards.
complicity6e.jpg

The newly erected plywood hoarding opposite the Westside Shopping Centre was the first to receive our attentions and then followed a bicycle hunt to find placards of Ahern low enough on the electricity poles to be busted without the aid of a stepladder - in contrast to Michael D's, Neill O'Brolchain's (Green Party) and Catherine Connolly's (Ind) and others (unmentionables) most were high, very high.

Another issue of vital importance on the election radar screen that the blind eye has been turned to is the Rossport/ Shell situation. It seems Ireland does'nt do conscience any more, just greed, war criminality, the obscene jury exoneration of vicious racist murder, the future facilitation of such through legislation by Kenny if and when he becomes Taoiseach and the re-elections of proven rogues, Lowry and Flynn on the first counts?.

Fuck it, I'm reaching for the sick bag and then the paint brush as the antidote.

Just wanted to know if when the election is over and the respective parties go around and collect their posters, will the people who did this go back and cover the graffitti up? I live in the area and it really is an eyesore, Westside is in bad need of a refurbishment, this kind of thing only adds to the run-down look. Thanks.

Thank you Galway for improving the election posters in your region. We now have only a few days to do likewise in the rest of the country.
Please remember that it is not just the Government parties that are prepared to facilitate the US militarisation fo Shannon.
Edna Kenny told Vincent Browne, in this weekends Village Magazine that "If your question is, the day after the goverment is formed, will US flights through Shannon will be stopped, then the answer is no." Apart from the dreadful grammar and English, this is one of the most spineless statements of the election campaign so far. Kenny has the cheek to quote various US presidents including JK Kennedy, and lecture us on democracy which he cites as "rule of the people, for the people, by the people", and to talk of his vision for leadership.
at least 58% of the Irish people are opposed to US military and CIA use of Shannon. Yet today there were two US fighter aircraft at Shannon and several flights of US troop-carriers.

It is already clear that there will be no change of Government policy regardless of who leads the Government after next Thursday.
It is also clear that we must continue to speak out on the abuse of Shannon airport but that words alone are no longer enough.
From now on, and especially from 24th May onwards, words are no longer enough.
Unless we do something to prevent US military and CIA abuse of Shannon airport, then we are complicit by our inactions.

This country has a lot to answer for. Today it is aiding the Americans to wage their underhand imperalistic campagin. 60 years ago it was sheltering Nazis on the run. Thank god there are people like you who help the rest see the reality of what goes on. Keep up the good work!

Well now that's nice. I think I will have to pick up a brush and do my bit to cover some of the local posters over in my neck of the woods.
Fair play to ya.
