Galway Shell to Sea : Iggy Madden trucks for Shell, he has no truck with conscience

category galway | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Monday March 26, 2007 22:38author by TD - Shell to Sea Report this post to the editors

Madden pumps for Shell, Rossport can go to hell !

Iggy Madden of Iggy Madden Haulage Ltd, Galway, crony, “close friend and confidante,” whatever, of shady Frank Fahey, was the target of Galway Shell to Sea’s concern this afternoon on account of the imminent removal by his firm of some 660,000 metric tonnes of blanket bog from Shell’s proposed gas refinery in Bellanaboy and dumped in a Bord Na Mona cutaway bog in Bangor Erris despite serious ecological concerns for such a venture.

As karma or serendipity would have it, the great man himself was to hand when 13 Shell to Sea activists, prior to a picketing of his depot, were handing in a letter of protest to his docklands offices. Instead of hearing our plaints with a fair ear we were verbally abused, instead, and subjected to diplomacy of the bar room, redneck, kind ; “I’ll shove yer camera up yer arse” "Do ya have a job" etc, etc. So it goes.
Diplomat Iggy : Blue in tongue and jumper
Diplomat Iggy : Blue in tongue and jumper

Below is the text of the letter handed in :

Iggy Madden Haulage Ltd 26th March 2007

Dear Sirs.

We are writing to express our concern over your acquisition of the peat removal contract for the proposed gas refinery site in Bellinaboy, Co. Mayo. As you are aware, there is no local consent for the construction of such a refinery and huge controversy still surrounds its construction, which among other things, poses a grave danger to the ecological system of the area and the water quality of the Carrowmore lake (the major supply of drinking water for the area). The risk of land destabilisation in an area where there have been hugely destructive landslides must also be mentioned.

The local community of the Erris Peninsula have been subjected to daily intimidation and repression at the hands of the large corporations who have hired you for this particular section of the development.

As the support group concerned, we are asking you to cease your work until there is at least a proper consultation process instigated and the very serious health and safety concerns of the local community in North West Mayo are taken into account. More information on the local communities proposals are available at the below website.

Galway Shell to Sea would point out that any involvement in this project on your company’s part would be shameful and bound to have a dire effect on your heretofore good reputation.

We look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely
Galway Shell to Sea

Of course we are working, you tool. Our job is to do the work that our government should be doing, ie, the responsible management of our natural resources and the firing of bad 'employees'. That'd be Shell and the likes of you Iggy Madden.

Another good protest by Galway S2S, and no harm in drawing attention to the cronies Shell have collected along the way. Peat haulage is an experiment gone wrong, just like Axonics, just like the pipeline, just like the proposed refinery, the whole damn project and the laws that got changed to accomodate it.

Keep up the good work, see you at Bellanaboy...

Well done Galway S2S!
Iggy Madden and his ilk employ the Nuremberg Defence.
Corporations like Shell and Statoil only succeed in trampling on human rights because
so many 'little guys' do their dirty work..

Losers........

You bunch of idiots......

I hope none of u drove to the protest today as most likely companies like shell have produced the fuel and I hope you are not connected to the national grid.....are you doing your part??

This man is trying to run as business...

'Save us from Shell'...what is that supposed to mean??

Do you really think you are going to be killed by Shell......such scare mongering is rediculous

a bit of sense please...

You should be ashamed of yourselves for victimising this person and tramping on his civil rights (just as you are preaching) the naming of individuals and posting of pictures on this website is disgraceful. Has this man done anything wrong? You a demonising a person trying to make a living and if it wasnt him it would be someone else.

Running a business is not a badge of honor to be hidden behind,
There is such a thing as personal responsibility and social conscience.

People running business have created a huge sphere of injustice socially, structurally and environmentally.

I would advise you (pat) to do a bit of homework on shells activities before you make such flippant and inaccurate remarks about those whom are protesting in order to secure the safety and environment of an entire community.

" if it wasnt him it would be someone else"

I heard a teenager used that defence in court when he was up for robbing purses from pensioners who had just collected their money from the local post office. If it wasn't him that robbed them, he reasoned, someone else from his flat complex would, so it might as well be him.

I suppose heroin pushers and arms dealers and so on could make the same claim- if we don't do it then someone else will.

Madden is just another huxter out to make a quick buck by joining the greed merchants who cosy up to Shell in Erris.

PS - Save your tears for a more deserving cause ie - The locals who will left with the mess when Iggy leaves Erris behind with his pieces of Silver!!

Thanks Galway S2S for WORK well done!! You have shown the mindset which is the underlying cause of what we're being subjected to here in nth Mayo.

'Blue in jumper and tongue' is apt - as long as those who only live 'by the shillin' keep getting away with it their arrogance and ignorance grows apace.

Enough is enough! Erris was always perceived as the 'end of the line' - it now becomes the end of the line for Madden and his ilk.

Thanks again to all at Galway S2S

Independent Mayo TD Dr Jerry Cowley has raised concerns his telephone may be under Garda surveillance.

Dr Cowley, who has been associated with the Shell-to-Sea group raised his concerns in an interview published yesterday in the Connaught Telegraphnewspaper.

The Mayo TD said he suspected his telephone has been under Garda surveillance for a number of months along with figures within the Shell-to-Sea group.

Mr Cowley said he had formally raised the matter with Minister for Justice Michael McDowell but had been told that "it would be contrary to the public interest to comment on the existence or otherwise of covert Garda operational measures and associated details."

You have no problem with the govt giving away the oil and gas off the west coast and building a refinery that's going to spew out pollution and fuck up the environment and kill the tourist industry? You think it'd all be better if these people cut their hair?

Your prejudice is blinding you.

Do you really think people would spend three months in jail (in high security) cos they weren't getting enough compo?

I guess you'll be voting FF in May then. You're obviously not that bright and full of hate, which is making you believe stupid things. Maybe you'll see the real picture one day.

If 'normal person's' rant is his/her perception of normality/rationality/reason, then he/she is in urgent need of counselling, anger management programmes, something/anything to help him/her readjust their mindset.

It is interesting by the way to note the deteriorating strains of troll responses to current activities.

Who's losing the plot - S2S or the 'shits in suits'??

so let me get this right, galway s2s is going to increase and consolidate it's support among the people of galway by protesting against a local businessman, his employees and customers. ye really know how to shoot yerselves in the foot....PROTEST AGAINST THE FACELESS CORPORATION, NOT THE LOCAL TRUCKER.....MORONS!
Once again we see how holier-than-thou protesters go against the ordinary people of Ireland, like Iggy Madden and the thousands of other people working directly or indirectly for the Shell project. Let me ask ye this, seeing as ye see no problem in intimidating a local trucker, would it be acceptable to ye to protest outside the houses of securitymen and steelfixers and builders working at the Shell site. The absolute hypocracy and stupidity of you fools is amazing.
And I won't be one bit suprised if this is deleted by the mods....lest any debate or dissent occur on this website, heaven forbid.

I understand why the preivious poster is angry.
But we dont have long to wait, for the people of erris and mayo to give their judjement on S2S.
The oral hearing is fast approaching, and the bull**** that has been spouted by S2S will be seen to be just that.
You speak of shooting oneself in the foot, S2S demanding a oral hearing, must have been their biggest blunder to date.
When they are asked to produce evedince to support their scare stories, they are going to look pretty stupid!
I predict their main argument will be "" we dont trust Shell"".
well we dont trust S2S, everything they say is treated with caution by most of the public.
the general election results will finish their ranting of having the support of the people of erris.

Not that my comment will persuade you guys or anything, but I think there are a number of problems with the way you guys are organising this campaign against Shell that doesn't make you look good to the majority of Irish people.

Firstly, as another poster mentioned, all most all the protesters in the photographs have a different style of dress and of hair than would be considered the "social norm" to most people, which would lead many people to associate the image with that of "professional protesters". I personally wouldn't judge someone based on looks, however image is everything if you wish to make a serious effort to encourage a large number of people against Shell.

Many people I know have stopped supporting the campaign because of this image of "professional" or "hippy" or "flower child" protesters which allows the media to make a field day out of things, claiming that the campaign has no support from the local community.

Secondly, the tactics of visibly protesting a local business person would be seen as completely unacceptable by most people, especially when waving signs stating various prepared slogans. The attitude by most people, especially traditional types of person who are mildly conservative in opinion, think that "if you have time to protest, you must have no job and are a no-body".

Otherwise, I think that you are doing a very good job but things need to be adjusted to stop the constant rubbishing of the protests. I have followed the protests from the first time I learned of residents objections, but have only managed to make my way to the actual area in Rossport/Bellenaboy twice.

Thanks for your time in reading this.

author by Protestorpublication date Sun Apr 08, 2007 14:04author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Comeon give us a break - If all the protestors were waering three piece suits you would have the same argument.

No matter the style of dress or the style of hair - the media would still find a reason to criticise the protest.

This goes back to the old establishment norm - 'I defend your right to protest as long as you don't upset anyone'.

What is the point of protesting if you don't cause upset or annoyance to certain individuals or groups?

In reality ordinary people worry far less about such things than you think.

author by anti shell campaignerpublication date Mon Apr 09, 2007 00:03author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Secondary picketing has a long and proud history. Iggy Madden is profiting from helping the "faceless corporation" and causing damage to the campaign against Shell, so he deserves to be protested against. His actions have consequences, and he should take those into account when decidding to help out Shell and the Govt.

In Galway, Madden has become the face of the scheme to destroy Erris's tourist industry by installing the refinery.

Everything else Bad Samaritan says is true. Dressing like a hippy or a pretend revolutionary gets you nowhere. If we have a radical message, we're better giving it a conservative presentation. Look at the way the most successful radical political party in the state functions. Dressing like businessmen and preaching marxism, and going from strength to strength.

Well-done guys and girls, real action after the EPA orchestrated talking-shop at Balmullet. The sort of action that stings those who would sell us all "down the river". Will normal-person still be routing for Shell, Bertie, Enda, "the drain rat " and other pillars of society with the big question mark over them [how big was the envelope?]. iI he is near, either the Sealine through the Rossport inlet or the Ballinaboy-Galway pipe when it blows! That is nearer than five miles cross wind or ten miles down wind. Because when they blow not just the environment but also everything will go - like Grosnia after the war! What the likes of Iggy Madden and his ilke are contributing to is, something that can wipe the whole Erris area off the face of the map. Wake up folks Shell has the the bomb primed, the clock's ticking !!!. We need even more "Action this day"!
