National demonstration to be held on Saturday against Irish government complicity in Bush’s wars

Fianna Fail Ard Fheis Saturday March 24

Demonstration demands:

STOP IRISH COMPLICITY IN BUSH’S WAR

U.S. MILITARY OUT OF SHANNON

The Irish Anti War Movement is organising a mass protest at the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis in CityWest this Saturday to demonstrate against Irish government complicity in Bush’s war. In particular the protest will focus on the use of Shannon airport by US military and “special rendition” torture flights.

Bush’s wars are based on lies—and the Irish government has tamely swallowed and backed up those lies without challenging them.

Indeed, Bertie Ahern and the Irish government have been actively collaborating with this monstrous and illegal war. They have allowed over 1,000,000 US troops to pass through Shannon since 2003.

They have turned a blind eye to secret “renditions”—torture flights. At least 147 secret CIA have flights landed at Shannon according to a recent EU Parliament report.

But the Irish people reject Irish complicity in Bush’s war crimes. A majority have long opposed the war and the use of Shannon airport by US military.

The US/UK invasion and occupation of Iraq has so far cost over 650,000 Iraqi lives, according to The Lancet. Over 4,000 more Iraqi civilians were killed in January 2007 alone.

Over 3,000 US soldiers have been killed and the war is costing the US $8.4 billion a month according to the Pentagon.

Iraq’s civil infrastructure is in pieces with 48% unemployment and just 4 hours electricity a day in Baghdad .

Bush’s response to this disaster is to order an extra 30,000 troops to be sent, to launch attacks on Baghdad like the criminal assault which devastated Fallujah, its hospitals and its civilian population two years ago.

Bush is intensifying his threats against Iran and backed Israel’s brutal invasion of Lebanon, as well as its continuing oppression of the Palestinians. In the US the tide is turning, with the election of a Democratic majority and a protest of half a million in Washington DC in January.

Most of the American people reject this war, and hundreds of thousands are prepared to continue demonstrating to stop it. SO SHOULD WE.

In election year we can make a difference by making rejection of Irish complicity in Bush’s war an election issue.

Demonstrate at the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis at CityWest Conference Centre on Saturday March 24. Assemble at 2pm at the Lidl car park in CityWest for the short march.

Buses are being organised from around the country, and to facilitate people using public transport, the Irish Anti War Movement is organising special shuttle buses from the LUAS station at the Red Cow to Citywest.

4TH ANNIVERSARY OF WAR AND OCCUPATION OF IRAQ
NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION THIS SATURDAY 24 MARCH
AT FIANNA FAIL ARD FHEIS, CITYWEST HOTEL, SAGGART, DUBLIN.

STOP IRISH COMPLICITY IN BUSH'S WAR / US MILITARY OUT OF SHANNON

ASSEMBLE 2.00PM AT FORTUNESTOWN SCHOOL, DOWN FROM LIDL, CITYWEST

(for directions download map from website). www.irishantiwar.org
Feeder bus shuttle from Red Cow LUAS Car Park from 1.30pm

To all activists and friends.
We are not alone.

Hundreds of thousands of people marched in cities throughout the world last Saturday to demonstrate against this monstrous war and occupation of Iraq and against a possible attack on Iran; in Australia, Chile, Turkey, South Korea, Malaysia, Greece, Italy, Spain …… and not least in the USA. In Washington tens of thousands of activists, war veterans, politicians and celebrities marched to the Pentagon in freezing conditions to vent their anger at the neo- con warlords inside. Many busloads of people were turned away due to bad weather. Big marches also took place in other US cities. We stand in solidarity with these US citizens who demand an end to this brutal war.

Do not be fooled by the media focus on the sectarian civil strife in Iraq and the presentation of the occupying forces as trying to keep the peace. The invasion and occupation by foreign troops have fuelled sectarian strife. It has been an appalling waste of human life for the people of Iraq with estimates of the dead now reaching as high as 650,000. In addition over 3,000 US soldiers have been killed. The Pentagon admits the monthly cost of the war is $8.4 billion.

The only way to end this carnage is for the occupying forces to leave Iraq and the whole of the Middle-East and to allow the people there to decide their own future.

Join us this Saturday to vent your anger at the complicity of the Irish Government in supporting this war through its facilitation at Shannon Airport of the US Military Machine and CIA torture flights.

Speakers include; Patricia Mc Kenna (Green Party), Aongus O Snodaigh (Sein Fein), Councillor Declan Bree, Labour Youth, SIPTU, Independent politicians, Brid Smith (SWP), Glenda Cimino (US Citizens in Ireland Against the War & iawm) and Dr. Abdullah Sayegh (Iraqi Citizen and iawm).

Performers include; Mary Coughlan (Singer), Róisín Elsafty (Singer), Mary O Malley (Poet) + others.

We will march from Fortunestown to the gates of Citywest Hotel (approx 1 mile) where we will hold a rally that includes;

- speeches and performances.
- naming of the Iraqi dead
- dropping of dolls at hotel gates to symbolise the killing of Iraqi children
- a silent die-in outside the Hotel Gates (weather pending)
- laying of headstones outside hotel gates

Bring along home-made placards, dolls, banners, peace flags, rain gear (just in case of showers) etc. Lets make this a colourful, noisy demonstration against the wanton waste of this brutal war.
