Friday 10th November at Bellanaboy.

category mayo | environment | news report author Monday November 13, 2006 16:17author by Annie Winters & friend. - Shell to Sea. Report this post to the editors

An account of the day of action, with emphasis on the quarry blockades.

The aim of Friday’s day of action was to prevent Shell working for one day. Campaigners split into groups with the aim of blockading the quarries, where much of Shell’s materials come from, and blockading the ‘Shell highway’ which the workers travel down to get to work.
2006_1112eve_10nov0008.jpg

The Blockade of Lennon's quarry, Glencastle.
A group of protesters gathered at the gates of Lennon’s quarries at 6:30am with the aim of blocking trucks bringing materials to the refinery site. Campaigners shut quarry gates at the main entrance with chains and padlocks and maintained a picket outside the site. Police arrived at the site shortly after 7am, apparently unsure as to how to deal with the situation. Several protesters gained access to the site and were pursued by quarry owner Mr Lennon, and several Gardaí. Mr Lennon and several of his employees physically assaulted one of the campaigners. The other five succeeded in eluding police for a longer period, eventually making their way through the quarry site to the back entrance whereupon they were confronted by several workers and Gardaí who escorted them from the site.

Meanwhile another group of campaigners had assembled on a narrow bridge on the road accessing the quarry’s back entrance and cement works with the similar objective of blockading construction traffic. Campaigners blocked trucks by standing and then sitting on the bridge in front of oncoming trucks. Gardaí arrived at the blockade sometime around 8-8:30 and forcibly removed protesters from the bridge. Campaigners remained on the bridge attempting to block traffic. An exchange ensued between quarry workers and protesters.

At around half nine additional gardaí arrived at the site accompanied by Sgt Connor O’Reilly and Sgt Dermot Butler (MY28). Upon instruction the assembled Gardaí, led by Butler and O’Reilly, began to violently drag protesters from the road and throw them across a barbed wire fence into a low lying field adjacent to the bridge. Several protesters were kicked and punched by the police as they were being dragged away, before being thrown some headfirst across the barbed wire fence down into the field. One man had his glasses snatched from his face and thrown away, another had his camera grabbed and smashed while others had mobile phones taken.

One man from Dublin Shell to Sea, Michael Nolan, became separated from the main group of protesters on the bridge and was badly beaten by Gardaí. Sgt Connor O’Reilly and two other gardaí repeatedly kicked and punched Mr Nolan as he lay on the road. Mr Nolan reported how O’Reilly instructed his accomplices to “Give him more pain.” Mr Nolan was dragged down the road by Sgt O’Reilly in a headlock who then threw him across the barbed wire into the field before wiping his bloodied hands on the man’s coat. Despite the fact that Mr Nolan was in severe pain and could not walk police refused to allow him be safely removed in a car and an ambulance had to be called.

Protesters were detained in the field into which Gardaí had thrown them. Police refused to let campaigners leave and when asked refused to refer to the legislation under which they were operating. When asked to cite the relevant legislation one young guard replied, “pick whichever you like.” Others ignored questions and Sgt Butler responded only with feigned deafness and point blank refusals to give the sought information. Unable to get a satisfactory answer from the guards protesters eventually decided to leave the field cross-country. A small group waited with the injured Mr Nolan for the ambulance to arrive. When the ambulance did arrive Gardaí responded with laughs and sneers as Mr Nolan was tended to.

Barrett's Quarry, Bangor.
Meanwhile around 9am or so a group of protesters made their way to Barrett’s quarry in Bangor with the aim of blocking the site. Campaigners stood in front of the site gates allowing trucks enter but preventing them from exiting the site. After dealing with the blockade at Lennon’s quarries a number of Gardaí made their way to Barrett’s where similar heavy-handedness ensued resulting in several injuries. Police physically removed protesters flinging them aside with kicks and punches. One local man, Pat O’Donnell sustained broken ribs and a camper received a sprained ankle after being kicked in the leg. Two protesters were arrested; they were John Monaghan of Rossport and a woman from Cork Shell to Sea. Both were informed that they had been charged but no charge sheets were issued.

The Shell Highway.
Campaigners gathered at the usual meeting place of the crossroads of the Shell highway and the Belmullet road from 6am. Gardaí had formed a cordon preventing campaigners accessing the Shell highway. Groups of campaigners circumvented the cordon by walking through woodland and bog to access the Shell highway much to the ire of Gardaí. Others forced their way through police lines. A scrum ensued with some campaigners making their way onto the Shell highway while others were dragged back through police lines. Several less successful attempts were made to break police lines and other campaigners continued to access the road through the wood and bog.

When the Shell convoy approached it was blocked by approximately 50 campaigners, who stood in front of the oncoming vehicles. After a warning by Spt Gannon to remove women and children batons were drawn by Gardaí. While some clearly relished the bludgeoning, with one guard being heard to comment, “lets have a baton party,” others were less enthusiastic. Some police exhibited marked reluctance to baton protesters ignoring the order to draw batons or failing to use them. Protesters were dragged away by police who flung several campaigners down a ten-foot drain flanking the road including a local man with back problems who had to be hospitalised as a result of his injuries. The Shell ambulance came for the man but quickly left after Gardai continued to throw protesters in the path of the paramedics. The ambulance drove off and another had to be called which did not arrive for another half an hour during which time the man remained lying in the bottom of a water logged ditch.

When lorries carrying materials attempted to make their way towards the site they were again blocked by campaigners some of whom climbed onto the vehicles. Sgt O’Reilly ordered some of the trucks to drive on with campaigners on the roofs, which they did not do. Campaigners were dragged from the vehicles by Gardaí and the convoy made its way past.

The protest finished around half nine or ten in the pouring rain with most campaigners having returned to work. Shell to Sea campaigners from around the country made their way buses back to Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Hi.
I wish to add my voice to those who condemn the appalling abuse of Irish citizens by the Garda yesterday.

I am from Derry, and watching the abuse on the news last night brought me right back to the civil rights march in October 1968, when Derry people were battered off the streets. The action of the N.I. police on that day was condemned worldwide.

I see no difference between the treatment of civil rights marchers in Derry ' 68, and the way the Gardaí behaved in Rossport yesterday, and am sickened to think that this country, which so many Northern Ireland people aspired to uniting with, is now propping upa police system which is ready and willing to use brutality on it's citizens.

Have the Gardaí learned nothing from N.I. History? It was Police brutality and injustice that brought people on to the streets. There can be no excuse for the scenes I watched on television last night, a police force is meant to protect citizens, not act like mindless thugs.

The sight of elderly people being thrown over ditches will live with me forever but I hope those scenes will ignite something in Irish people. Too many of them were prepared to turn a blind eye to what was happening in Northern Ireland, I hope for Ireland's sake they will now stand up and be counted.

Don't give up!

Something about 'subversive' elements causing violence and trying to take over the campaign.

That shower (Sunday Indo) quite literally get a proverbial hard on by repeating over and over again just how right those in power are and anyone who might have an opinion is wrong. Look at the invasion of Iraq; they had gutter journos like that senile looney Eoin Harris and sleazy lardass Brendan O' Connor lampooning anyonone against George Bush's crusade as anti-American, anti-Semitic (cos Saddam was a threat to Israel, we must be anti Jewish for not wanting the invasion of Iraq) anti-sweetness, anti-goodness and anti-light!

Neither of the aforementioned poison pen artists had anything to say the results of this week's US elections

Just take comfort from the fact that, in my personal experience, anytime I've gone into a newsagent late to get The Sunday Times, it is always sold out, but there are piles and piles of Sunday Indos about. Last Monday morning there was near on a hundred of the rags filling two wheely bins outside Londis on Dame Street. People can be dumb, but not that dumb to the point that they'll regularly enjoy reading about how stupid they are for hating George Bush, about the wonderful dinner party that was enjoyed by yet another dullard, about how RTE is run by Sinn Fein and about how the half a page long that is the international news section is borrowed from other news agencies.I wouldn't wipe my backside with that paper!:0D

No more about that paper. If we ignore it, it WILL actually go away.

Those who were victims of gardai violence on Friday should make formal complaints, particulalry those with photographic proof. Making complaints however can only have a real impact if large numbers do it.

Considering the brutal and violent actions of the Gardai in batoning peaceful protestors off the orads perhaps it is time that the nameand addresses of these Gardai responsible for such actions be published on the site. Surely a policy of naming ans shaming them would be the right thing to do.

We need to keep pressing ahead and keep up the momentum but not lose our heads. Absolutely agree dont buy the Independent, Mail or any other degrading rubbish. Spread the word about the December the 2nd rally at work, home everywhere you can and the rally on the 24th November.
Just talking about the issues raises the profile of this struggle. So called intelligent people are still not aware of the true story. the sensationalist papers love to focus on all the negative don't get sidetracked into pointless arguments stick to the facts because no one can argue those away.
Get car stickers. I have two of them on my car and they quite literally are turning heads. Well it definitely isn't the car or me!!!!!! So a reaction is there. its working! Get posters anything that will make people react. this is Science week if anyone is a teacher out there look at the Shell sights and discuss the issues in class, great for SPHE too. It can be done DO IT.
I hope the protesters in the photos are OK? Can anyone tell me where i could get the address of Ken Loach film director please as i have a letter i would like to send him re the protests???Sensible answers only.

What happened on friday was disgusting. What was worse though was reading the sunday papers and seeing a total lack of concern on the part of the main stream media to do their job, ie act as the fourth estate, report the truth and back the citizenry. On the radio discussion programs there was a gulf of difference in the sunday paper discussion between the old establishment (RTE) and the newer (Newstalk) on RTE ALL the panelists focused on the need for "the rule of law" to be respected. Newstalk at least provides hope, the panelists were unamious in it being another example of police brutality and about 90% of the texts condemned the, so called, Garda. Well done to Newstalk and the panelists who framed the debate.

Cops using so called Security Correspondents to spin their lies for them. Story below from the Independent today. Maura Harrington is apperently on sick leave from her teaching job!! Guards are going to bring charges against those who have attacked cops! I think anyone who has photos from last Friday should send them to mainstream media outlets as well as lawyers etc. The cops are shaping up to do damage to people and will start fitting people up on charges of assault etc. They are using the likes of Brady and the SIndo to do their bidding. Should look at inviting independent observers (journalists, lawyers, Amnesty etc) to the next Day of Action. All incidents of assault by cops in as much as possible should be centrally logged.

Maybe next time the Dublin Taxi Drivers, or the Farmers, or the Fishermen or the Nurses, or those calling for the rights of the disabled or maybe even the Guards themselves (remember the Blue Flu) peacefully block the roads we will hear you calling for them to beaten off the streets.

Most of these were taken from the bridge, where protesters had managed to work their way through the police line. During the scrum, one of the more effective ways to get people through was to tap a guard on the shoulder from behind and say"let that man through" in a strong voice from behind.

Already local people associated with the protest have been approached at their homes by guards with bogus charges and accusations. It really is a desperate situation with constant garda roadblocks and monitering of people as they go about their daily business. I personally have been stopped over a dozen times going to work in and out of Belmullet which is a good 7 miles from Bellenaboy and over 14 miles form Rossport. And Where do the victims of intimidation by the protestors make formal complaints too?The gardai were just protecting those who didnt deserve that sort of violence and intimidation on their way to work to make a decent living.Protosters have lost a lot of suuport from last Fridays shenanignas and its not just me who thinks this...read any editoral or comments made by Irish people in newspapers/radio over the weekend.None of them blame the gardai for the violence, they were doing their job and protecting Itish citizens.

I fail to see why last Friday's demo lost the protestors support when they used the same tactics as have been used many times before; the only thing that differed was the Gardai reaction (use of batons).

In relation to complaints, the number of formal complaints received in Belmullet against Garda intimidation and violence far, far exceeds any other form of complaint received.

a slection of highlighhts from your report

--------
A group of protesters gathered at the gates of Lennon’s quarries at 6:30am with the aim of blocking trucks bringing materials to the refinery site. Campaigners shut quarry gates at the main entrance with chains and padlocks and maintained a picket outside the site.

Several protesters gained access to the site

Meanwhile another group of campaigners had assembled on a narrow bridge on the road accessing the quarry’s back entrance and cement works with the similar objective of blockading construction traffic. Campaigners blocked trucks by standing and then sitting on the bridge in front of oncoming trucks

protesters made their way to Barrett’s quarry in Bangor with the aim of blocking the site. Campaigners stood in front of the site gates allowing trucks enter but preventing them from exiting the site

Others forced their way through police lines. A scrum ensued with some campaigners making their way onto the Shell highway while others were dragged back through police lines. Several less successful attempts were made to break police lines

When lorries carrying materials attempted to make their way towards the site they were again blocked by campaigners some of whom climbed onto the vehicles.
--------------
All these actions are illegal.

I'm sorry but that is pushing the limits of peaceful action. OK the gardas overreacted (illegally by all accounts) but they were put under serious deliberate pressure from these protestors who were quite happy to break the law as and when they saw fit.

So shame on the few guards who broke the law they are supposed to uphold but a greater shame on those who initated these incidents by taking illegal actions under the guise of peaceful protest

Dissenter I find your respect for the law above all else rather had to swallow.

The law is made by those with power and money to favour those with power and money.

This is very obvious in Rossport where first the law found that it was OK to take over peoples land to plant a pipeline they did not want, then the law found it was OK to jail 5 of those people for continuing to protest this use of their land. Now the law says it is OK for men with clubs to beat people siting down, or pick them up and toss them onto a barbed war fence or into a ditch.

This law of yours is an ass.

author by indeedpublication date Tue Nov 14, 2006 17:27author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I also find it quite strange this odd conflation of legality with peaceful and illegality with unpeacable. This doesn't hold up to any form of scrutiny, comparison or analysis. It merely plays on ignorance. If anything, most of this is revealing the hidden violence of the law and the gardai, also not to be conflated.

The very thought that attempting to push through a line of guards can be counted as justification for them beating you senseless shows how entrenched and irrational a lot of the support for shell is. the guards could just as easily have pushed the protesters off the road and out of the way of the trucks same as any other day. This was not a violent protest. Standing on a road does not count as violence...peaceful civil disobedience? yes...violence? no. And disobedience is really what this all is about, not violence, nothing to do with shell's plans either really. It is the fact that the people of rossport have not allowed themselves to be controlled, have not backed down, have not just listened when the government told them it was none of their concern. Disobedience is not violence but it will always be met with such. So let's all bow our heads and follow. Or not...

Just spotted this on RTE news from a while back in september.
A poll carried out in mayo by tg4 found that 61% of people in mayo supported shell to seas demands that the refinery be moved offshore and 66% supported the Rossport 5. And yet as always the newspapers will continue to print shell's statements that the protesters are in a minority isolated and alone, that it is shell in fact that have widespread support. They quite clearly don't.
http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/0925/mayopoll.html
Must be scary for the government to think what will happen when they have to acknowledge that this is not just a bunch of leftwing loonies (no offence meant to anyone I fall in the category too) but ordinary decent people who don't think of themselves in anyway political and yet can see the elephant in their living room which the government cannot...but then it takes a special kind of tunnel vision to make it to government after all.

When there was alot of shoving by the cops he seemed to be a reasonable voice but then I saw him drag a lad from Dublin off the road when he jumped in front of one of the trucks. The seargent then gave him a sly boot up the arse but it was seen by alot of people and he was berated for it.

Little man syndrome if you ask me.

Everything we know is wrong . . . . . The Gárdaí should join the protest ! . . . . can't beat them . . . . .

Actually check out what the nightmare could look like on this link . . . . http://petromag.testwebb.no/files/064-079_russland.pdf . . . . . . and that's just for starters.

If high preassure volitile gas can be processed at sea, then do it. It's already happening outside of Cionn tSáile and it's the same body of ocean.

I looked at the file you attached to your comment. Terrifying pictures everyone who wants to know more about what could happen if this refinery goes ahead should look at these reports. I tried to make out where they were from is it Russia? The report is written in German/Dutch? Whatever it is it's scary!

I fully support the shell to sea protestors, i'm from roscommon and we live in fear of pylons and superdumps being built in this area. Everyone should support this campaign because if shell win then the state can build anything they want anywhere they want and no amount of objections and protests will stop this. How would the people of Belmullet and Bangor erris like an incinator or superdump in their area, why not build one where shell propose to dump the bog from the refinery site, then we'll know what the people of them areas are like. MCC wanted to erect windmills 1 mile ballina side of bangor erris but were objected by a certain former county councillor from bangor erris and other residents in the village because they didn't look nice, also a small housing estate outside belmullet was objected to by a bord na mona foreman because he didn't want one near his home and then they have the cheek to complain about the shell to sea campaign. Shame on you. Send SHELL TO SEA

I think the language is Norwegian (Norsk). The refinery is on Sakhalin Island in Russian East Asia, just north of Japan. It is currently in the midst of an oil boom of Klondike proportions. One of the controversial refinery sites Sakhalin 2 is owned by a consortium including Shell (55% share). Their pipeline had to be rerouted because of concern it would affect migrating whales! So much for the non-migrating people of Bellanaboy and Rossport.
