support from tyneside for rossport

A mixed bunch of people blockaded Newcastle-upon-Tyne's largest Shell Garage and one lovely lass goes a little bit further than commonsense dictates...

Newcastle's largest Shell garage was blockaded for an hour this morning on the 11th anniversary of the hanging of the Ogoni 9 and in solidarity with Rossport and anti-corporate struggles world-wide.

One protestor climbed on to a handily placed Shell Tanker to get a better view of the rush hour traffic. Worried local police pleaded with her for 45 minutes to come down and promised her she would not be arrested. Eventually taking pity on them (and desperately needing a wee) she clambered down and and was ,of course, immediately arrested.

We had good support from local residents, invited in for cups of tea and all the conveniences, and from hordes of passing kids on their way to school. We were even offered a place to stand in a guys garden when the police started shoving every off the forecourt!

All in all a good mornings work and seen by hundreds of passing motorists on the busiest rush hour crawling road into the toon.

Good luck to you all in Rossport, thanks to Fin for making it real. xx

Oh please come down, please, please come down...

Bloody Shell Officer! You promised she wouldn't be arrested...

At 9am this morning, a Nottingham protestor was run over by a 4x4 during the peaceful blockade of the Shell Garage on London Road as part of the Soldarity actions with the Rossport anti Shell Campaign and in commemoration of the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa and his comrades by hanging in Nigeria.
The protestor is currently in hospital, the car ran right over his knee, the extent of his injuries are not known.
We will post more details as and when available.

On international day of solidarity with Rossport someone tried to run me down at the entrance to the Shell garage and then had the police question protestors as someone had kicked his car. Needless to say car drivers have a higher status in society than protestors, beware! It occurs to me that we need better defense tactics in order to respond to such agressive drivers. Of course it's a daily thing regardless of whether you're protesting or not but that just makes them more indignant. Any way this is pretty obvious stuff... hope the Nottingham individual is ok and where does the driver live?
