Buy Nothing Day is coming up. It takes place on the 25th of November 2006.
It's a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life. Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!
The message is simple, shop less - live more! The challenge is to try simple living for a day, spend time with family and friends, rather than spend money on them.
Buy Nothing Day also exposes the environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism. The developed countries - only 20% of the world population are consuming over 80% of the earth's natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and unfair distribution of wealth.
In Galway we are trying to organise an event for the day. We meet every week - next meeting takes place on Thurs 9th of Nov. upstairs in Java's.
Last year we got dressed up as Zombies and shouted 'Shop til' you drop', Must buy more'.
We went around with shopping bags and 'worshipped' the Securicor vans. We also had a film screening of the 'Corporation'
Join us in Galway or organise your own events in your towns.
