Don't the bastards ever learn?.

The Democracy Now website is reporting that Bush & co are facing fresh accusations of seeking regime change in Venezuela. Documents obtained by the Associated Press show the US Agency for International Development – USAID – has given more than twenty six million dollars to opponents of President Hugo Chavez in the last four years. USAID released copies of more than one hundred contracts with the groups

– but hid the names of about half of them. Larry Birns, director of the Council on Hemispheric Affairs, said: "This indicates there is a great deal of money, a great deal of concern to oust or neutralise Chávez. The US is waging diplomatic warfare against Venezuela."

This should come as no surprise to anyone. Chavez must represent, or appear to represent, a tremenduous challenge to Bush and the Neocons: a poor Indian rises to be president and invokes Socialism in South America. The very notion that the common man can have a stake in the welfare of his country would not appeal to the élite politicos of the New American Century. Watch what happens - CIA-inspired riots, demos, the lot. Accusations of corruption, and so on and so forth. The CIA operate here, incidentally, so perhaps we can ask them about Chavez. It's a disgrace, of course: but at least Bush hasn't said Chavez has WMD. (He'll invent something else).
