Closing Arguments Begin in Catholic Worker / Pitstop Ploughshares Trial

category national | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Thursday July 20, 2006 12:39author by eeekkkk Report this post to the editors

The prosecution in the case have begun in the last hour or so to make their closing arguments to the Jury. It is likely that the defense will make theirs before the end of the day. There is a very very small possibility of a verdict late today. Most likely scenario is that tomorrow will see a verdict in this trial.

Frequent updates will be on indymedia.ie

thanks again to the 5 for their action, which did have a big impact, it begs the question that ciaran brings up in this audio piece and that harry browne brought up at the ATGWU when kathy kelly and jimmy massey spoke; what are the rest of us doing......

sorry have not been able to get down enough, hoping for justice, hoping this all brings more action for further justice

thanks for sparking things...

The Prosecution and Defence have finished their closing arguments.

The Judge will begin to address the Jury tomorrow morning at 10.30 or 11.00.

She will complete her address on Monday morning

This was one of the alternatives given to the jury and, after retiring to think about it, they decided to accept this one.

This means that probably the verdict will be given some time on Monday.

In my humble opinion, all 4 addresses to the jury were brilliant - and all different.

A fuller report on the day's proceedings will be posted later.

First of all, good luck to the Pitstop Ploughshares.

Secondly, can anyone tell me if the Judge ruled against their defence going to the Jury this time, as on the previous two occasions? (By this I mean the argument that they had lawful excuse for damaging the planes because they were preventing a greater crime).

author by Anti-War Irelanderpublication date Thu Jul 20, 2006 21:07author address author phone Report this post to the editors

The 'lawful excuse' argument was allowed this time, though she may say a few words about this in her summation. The important thing is that it was allowed and the jury can make up its own mind.

I would guess that means that the chance of not guilty verdicts is high. Let's hope so anyway.

author by Anti-War Irelanderpublication date Thu Jul 20, 2006 21:33author address author phone Report this post to the editors

It is certainly a much higher possibility than it was before the 'lawful excuse' defence was allowed. Fingers crossed. Moreover, there were very strong closing speeches by the defence barristers. Let's hope the jury makes the right decision.
