Joshua Casteel, a member of the Iraqi Veterans Against War, and a former interrogator at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison, will speak of his experiences at a public meeting organised by Cork Alliance Against War, Wed July 26th, Metropole Hotel, Macurtain St. 8pm
It is over 2 years since the appalling Abu Ghraib photos appeared in the media. Research shows that more than 600 U.S. personnel have been implicated in abuse of over 460 detainees in U.S. custody in Iraq, Afghanistan, and at Guantanamo Bay, yet the U.S. has taken only limited steps to investigate and punish those implicated.
A briefing paper presents findings of the Detainee Abuse and Accountability Project (DAA) a joint project of New York Universitys Center for Human Rights and Global Justice, Human Rights Watch and Human Rights First initiated 2005. The project is the first comprehensive accounting of credible allegations of torture and abuse in U.S. custody in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo.
Casteel was so sickened by what went on while he was at Abu Ghraib that he applied for conscientious objector status and now works in the US with IVAW.

Its part of the IAWM but is made up almost entirely (bar about two people) of swp of which there are only three or four in Cork.
Probably going to be a good meeting but people should be clear about who is organising it.
yes pat is in the swp so he done great work as have all the people in that anti war grope and it made up of more than 4 or 6 people their have been nights were their has been up to 10 people at a meeting and at most 2 or 3 of the people their were members of the swp
go to the meeing it going to be good
The only leftie activists involved are three SWP (it's run by two swpers who hold the positions) and two brothers as well as one or two European students. Cork anti-war activists are involved with Antiwar Ireland and the CAZ not this SWP front.
so u can only be a realy anti war activisis if u are only in anti war ireland is that wath u are saying .if your numbers are right 2 swp 2 brothers 2 europeans thats 6 people thats still only 2swp people in a meeting of 6 and by the way your numbers are wrong .have u been to a caaw meeting .how many people at a awi meeting wath other gropes are they belong to.
caaw is a good grope and has done great work because their was no anti war grope in the city for way to long .
the best of luck to awi here in cork city the more people doing anti war actived the better
I heard this gentleman speak last night at the David Rovics gig here in Dublin for the Pitstop Ploughshares. Excellent speaker and very interesting.
Moreover, to the delight of the Dublin Catholic Workers, it turned out that he himself is associated with the Catholic Worker Movement in the US and, consequently, is hugely supportive of the Pitstop Ploughshares.
Should be a fascinating meeting and I'd certainly encourage people to attend! Well done to the organisers.
This 5 min video of Jeb Bush protest contains interveiw with Joshua Casteel

I heard Josha Casteel speak at the Pitstop gig last night.
He is a very bright guy with a wealth of experience about this war. He is his own man and nobody's stooge - SWP, anarcho, CW & especially the U.S. government. This war, and Ireland's escalating involvement in it, and the probabity of Ireland beng tragetted by those fighting back (only Irleand & Denmark remain as the only country's of "OLD EUROPE" still offering proactive support for this UK/US invasion), are issues of such great siginificance they transcend the death roll of leftist sectarianism.
The Irish Left is so self-defeating.
If themes of mutuality & celebrating opposition & minimally publicisg other left events at whatever left meeting...the market for oppositional would expand, we'd develop an oppositional culture & there would be more Trots, anarchoes, NGO liberals & CW'S. Instead we continually compete for a limited market, censor & deride each other & piss people off from coming anywhere near left culture & politics.
if you get the chance, do yourself a favour and go here Joshua Casteel speak.
What is required is greater mutuality and cooperation not competition. Of course, such mutuality needs to be a two-way street and let us hope that becomes a reality in the very near future.
With regard to the meeting in Cork, it doesn't matter who is organising this, it is an anti-war meeting with an excellent speaker and should be supported. The organisers should be commended not criticised.
well said
and well done to awi meeting last week
and im sure the this meeting well be also very good
the more things going on the better no matter were people are from
