The Annual Jim Gralton Commemorative Weekend and School will take place in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim, on the weekend of the 22nd/23rd April.

The School will focus on the Proclamation as a basis for discussion and the title of this years event is “1916 – A Proclamation Unfulfilled.”

The Programme is as follows:-

2.00.p.m. Official opening of School by Cllr. Declan Bree, Chair, Gralton Labour History Committee.

2.10.p.m. Session One

Proclamation: "We declare the right of the people of Ireland..........to be sovereign and indefeasable......"

‘Irish Sovereignty, the National Question and the E.U.’

Speaker: Patricia McKenna. Green Party

Chair: Cllr Martin Kenny. Sinn Fein member Leitrim County Council.

2.30.p.m. Discussion

3.10.p.m. Session Two

Proclamation; "....the Irish Nation must, by.....the readiness of its children to sacrifice themselves.....prove itself worthy..."

‘Commemorating Blood Sacrifice 1916 -1936: Origins of the Easter Lily and the Flanders Poppy campaign in the Irish Free State.’

Speaker: Dr. Ann Matthews. Author of the Rise and Demise of Women in Irish Politics 1900-1941”

It has been confirmed that Mr Vincent McGrath of the Rossport Five will be the main speaker at this years Annual Gralton Commemorative Ceremony which will take place at 3.00.p.m. on Sunday afternoon next (23rd April)at the site of Jim Gralton’s famous Pearse-Connolly Hall at Effernagh, Co Leitrim.

The Commemorative weekend and school will be formally opened by the Chairman of the Gralton Labour History Committee, Councillor Declan Bree, at the main venue for the event, in the new Dock Arts Centre in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday afternoon (22nd April)

To mark the 90th anniversary of the 1916 Rising the school is taking as its theme the significance of the 1916 Proclamation to contemporary Ireland.

Guest speakers include, Ms Patrica McKenna, the former Green Party M.E.P., Dr. Ann Matthews, author of “The Rise and Demise of Women in Irish Politics”, the trade union economist Mr Tony Moriarty, who is a research officer with the Amicus trade Union, Mr Eamonn McCann, writer and journalist and member of the Socialist Environmental Alliance, and Mayo woman Ms Maura Harrington a founder member of the Davitt League.

“Considering the theme of the school and indeed the list of guest speakers, our Committee is hopeful that the school will attract a larger than usual number of local participants this year.” Councillor Bree said.

My father is Jim Gralton's great nephew, also named James Gralton. We live in Boston, MA, USA. Just thought I'd drop a note and say hello.
