GMIT Bus Shelter Campaign

category galway | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday February 08, 2006 13:33author by GMIT activist

On Monday last, two members of the GMIT Labour Youth Branch along with the President of the Students’ Union, met with Galway City Council with a view to restoring the bus shelter which used to be located on the Dublin Road directly across from the Main Campus.

The group, which included GMIT student activists Fintan Hastings and Cian Egan, met with Galway City Director of Transportation and Infrastructure, Mr. Tom Hernon and explained to him in detail how imperative it was that the shelter be restored and how students of the college were forced to stand in the rain night after night with no protection from the weather.

The Director, on hearing that students of the college must walk approximately a kilometre before reaching the nearest bus shelter, was very sympathetic and gave assurances that something would be done quickly to remedy the situation.

Mr. Hernon informed the group that a survey team will be sent out to the site within two weeks to conduct preliminary work to restore the shelter and all going well, work should commence on the shelter within two weeks of that date.

While this campaign is a relatively small scale one in the context of most campaigns, it has attracted considerable support and attention from the students of the college. It has we hope shown that political activism does indeed serve an important purpose and that getting active on campus is worthwhile.
