A Protest against the EU Services Directive

Sinn Féin will hold a lunchtime protest against the European Services Directive 14 February at 12:30 outside the European Commission building on Molesworth Street. The theme of the protest will be to ‘Kiss the Services Directive Goodbye’.
Sinn Féin European Affairs spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD said, “Sinn Féin is determined to oppose the Services Directive on all fronts and at every opportunity. This protest will coincide with a major demonstration by European trade unions in Strasbourg.
“The Directive will be debated in the European Parliament tomorrow evening and MEPs will vote on it on Thursday. We aim to highlight the extent of the opposition and public resentment towards the Directive and we will be encouraging people to contact MEPs and urge them to vote against it on Thursday.
“Amongst Sinn Féin’s concerns about the Directive are; it puts downward pressure on wages, and provides companies with numerous loopholes which they can exploit to pay less than the minimum wage; it provides an incentive to service providers to move to low-wage, low-tax countries with poorer standards of regulation thereby encouraging a ‘race to the bottom’ in relation to employment conditions, health and safety standards, quality and accessibility guarantees and also that under the Directive, an Irish government would be unable to protect workers and service users in Ireland.
“On behalf of Sinn Féin I invite all those who are opposed to the Directive to join us in protest outside the European Commission building on Molesworth Street tomorrow St. Valentines Day at 12:30 lunchtime to ‘Kiss the Services Directive Goodbye’ concluded Deputy O Snodaigh.
