A Dublin Simon Benefit, Whelans, Dec 22nd

You’ll dip your hand into your pocket more times than you’ll remember this Christmas-but No Room At the Inn promises to be one night you won’t forget. Taking place on Dec 22 in Whelans, The Guggenheim Grotto will headline this Christmas benefit night in aid of Dublin Simon. Tadhg Cooke, The Million Dollars and a host of Irish talent also join forces for a truly worthwhile festive whip around. Show your support and spread the word.

As the world becomes a smaller place, it becomes more difficult to see what’s often right in front of us. But there comes a point when we have to face up to what’s going on, literally, on our very own doorsteps.

In total almost 3,000 adults are homeless in the Greater Dublin Area.

And there is no time worse for the homeless than the winter.

At a time when most of us are making Christmas lists, meeting for drinks and wrapping up in our finest against the cold, others are merely trying to survive the season.

But this isn’t a guilt trip; it isn’t a case of us and them. This winter you’ll dip your hand into your pocket more than you will remember. But remember at least one time- No Room At The Inn, a benefit gig for Dublin Simon will be held in Whelans on December 22nd. Dublin favourites The Guggenheim Grotto will be joined by Tadhg Cooke, The Million Dollars and many more for what promises to be not only an entertaining evening of music but one hell of a whip around for those who really need it. All proceeds will go directly to Dublin Simon, and there will be a rep on the night to let you know exactly how your money will help.

Please, this season, show your support and spread the word for a worthy cause.

Firstly, though I've no doubt as to the proberty of the excercise, it would be nice to know in advance on this free event notice board, what is planned for the money raised.

Scondly, altruism is replacing taxation as the mechanism for wealth re-distribution in society at home and world-wide. Making basic rights into charitable favours is one way of putting the most disadvantaged in their place.

The rich feel good, the poor beholdent and dependent on mercy - not very conducive to long-term answers or human dignity.

"but something needs to be done now...the poor can't wait till we get everything right sometime in the future", has been said to me, not by an advocate of charity, funny enough, but by an advocate of Human Rights Law (Kathleen Kavanagh of UCG).

The perpetual stop-gap that's there now is an improvement perhaps, on days of yore. It does, however, shoulder responsibilities of the state and is financially encouraged by the state to do this. When such work becomes a profession, the public interest and social causes of homelessness can take a back seat.

Simon was once volunteer-based. What percentage of the director's salary would match, or negate the need for this fund-raising event?
