Conference on Irish divestment from Israel
Date(s): 26 Nov 2005, 1:30PM, in the Teachers Club, Parnell Square, Dublin

Conference Theme:
This conference is intended to launch a divestment campaign in Ireland, with particular emphasis on getting Irish pension funds to divest from the Irish company, CRH , which owns 25% of the only Israeli cement-manufacturing company, until/unless it can provide an absolute guarantee that it is no longer involved in the supply of materials used in illegal Israeli construction projects in the West Bank.

Attention will also be paid to the fact that the French company which runs the Dublin tram system, Connex, is one of two French companies which have recently signed a contract to build an illegal Israeli tram system linking Pisgat Ze'ev and French Hill, two illegal Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem. The conference will consider what action should be taken on the Connex franchise to run the Dublin tram system.

Conference Schedule: (1:30pm to 6pm)
The venue will open at 1:30 PM. The conference will start at 2:00 PM and will finish at 6:00 PM.

Keynote Speakers: Ilan Pappe, Diana Buttu

Ilan Pappe
Ilan Pappe has justly been described (by Salman Abu Sitta, an expert on the Palestinian right of return) as "an honourable academic with integrity and conscience." Pappe is a Jewish Israeli, born to a German Jewish family in Haifa in 1954. He is one of the Israeli "new historians", a group of historians who are so-called because their writings, based on access to material recently released by the British and Israeli archives, has started to undermine myths about the foundation and early years of the Israeli state, myths that were promoted by an earlier generation of Israeli historians who were more concerned about building up the self-image of the new state than in historical accuracy. The books written or edited by Ilan Pappe include:
The Making of the Arab-Israeli Conflict 1947-51; Israel/Palestine Question (Rewriting Histories); Middle Eastern Politics and Ideas: A History from WithinJordan in the Middle East: The Making of a Pivotal State 1948-1988; Britain and the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1948-51

Diana Buttu
Diana Buttu is a legal advisor to the PLO on peace negotiations with Israel. She was born in Canada to Palestinian parents who had emigrated from Israel before she was born. She has a PhD in refugee issues from Stanford University. She is the daughter of Palestinian refugees, she holds a doctorate from Stanford University on 'refugee issues' and is a recognised authority in this field and in the field of international law. She has participated in many speaking tours in Canada, the United States, Europe and the Middle East.
