Public Meeting
Public Meeting - Climate Change: How do we stop Global Warming?
Where: ATGWU Hall, 55 Middle Abbey St
When: Thurs 27 Oct 7.30 pm
Speaker: Jonathan Neale – Climate Campaigner Climate Change: How to stop global warming
2005 is set to be the warmest year on record, 2004 saw the first ever hurricane in the southern Hemisphere, scientists are now agreed that the atmosphere is getting hotter and getting hotter more quickly!
Even scientists are unsure what this will mean for us but what we can be sure of is that we will see more hurricanes, floods, epidemics, drought, food shortages and the loss of many coastal areas?
What can be done to stop it?
On Thursday 27th Oct Jonathan Neale, an activist in the “Campaign against Climate Change”, will outline some ideas that could offset the worst effects of Climate Change at a Public Meeting in ATGWU Hall, Middle Abbey St.
Jonathan will argue that there are no quick fix solutions. “It will be expensive, it will damage profits and will require massive public investment in transport and insulation. This in turn will require regulation of the market and massive government spending” – the exact opposite of what our neo liberal FF/PD government wants.
The Campaign against Climate Change is calling for international demonstrations on December 3 to coincide with the UN organised Meeting of the Parties (to the Kyoto Protocol). So far there will be demonstrations in Ireland, England, Scotland, Canada, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Japan and
Australia – more are being confirmed every day.
The meeting will be hosted by the Socialist Workers Party. Melisa Halpin, one of the organisers of the meeting, said “Kyoto promises small cuts in carbon, and works through the market. That means it will be nothing like good enough. But it is an important first step in governments taking climate change seriously so it is still very important that George Bush is forced to sign it. We can start this process by joining in demonstrations on December 3.”
Plans for the Dublin demonstration will be outlined at the meeting.
Bio - Jonathan Neale is a writer and an activist in the Campaign against Climate Change in England, and one of the two people coordinating global demonstrations on climate change on December 3. Marches have been confirmed for that day in Ireland, England, Scotland, Canada, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Japan and Australia, but news of others is coming in almost every day.
Jonathan Neale was born in New York and lives in London. He writes politics for adults and fiction for young people. Jonathan's most recent books are What's Wrong with America?; The American War: Vietnam; and Himalaya, a children's novel. He was one of the organisers of the Genoa protests in Italy in 2001, one of the two founders of Media Workers against the War in London, and played a central role in the European Social Forum in London.
