Whiteline Border Protest in Support of Dessie O'Harea

Members of the Free Dessie O’Hare Campaign will be holding a White-line
picket along the Derry-Donegal border at Bridgend this coming Saturday
22nd October at 3pm. The protest is part of a series of widespread
solidarity actions to highlight the continued unjust imprisonment of
Republican Socialist political prisoner Dessie O’Hare.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

17th October 2005

A spokesperson for the Free Dessie O’Hare Campaign in Derry stated:

“Back in 1988 Dessie was given a 40-year prison sentence for a number of
offences including the kidnapping. This sentence to date is one of the
longest in the history of the 26 counties of this island for any offence
other than capital murder.

“In late 2002 Dessie O’Hare was transferred from Portlaoise to the lower
security Castlerea Prison in Co. Roscommon, and put on a pre-release
programme. Over the past number of years, he has been freed on 15 to 20
temporary paroles as part of that programme. As it currently stands, the
Prison Service have basically washed their hands of him and the decision
as to when he gets released is up to Justice Minister, Michael McDowell.

“This Saturday, during a cross border white-line picket we will be calling
for Dessie to be released immediately, not because of the Good Friday
Agreement but because Dessie O’Hare is a political prisoner. Dessie O’Hare
is a qualifying prisoner who is eligible for release.

“We will be clearly stating that Minister McDowell must act now and free
Dessie O’Hare immediately from Castlerea Prison as Dessie's continued
imprisonment is completely unjust and it must be brought to an end now.

“We would like to call on all those interested in the issue of human
rights to turn up and show their support by attending Saturday afternoon’s
white-line picket. We will be joined on the day by members of the
national Free Dessie O’Hare Campaign based in Dublin.

“Everyone is welcome to come along and show their support for the Free
Dessie O’Hare Campaign which will be assembling on the Bridgend border
crossing on at 3pm sharp.”

Some of us remember poor Tony McCluskey, with his fingers chopped off with bolt cutters...

And what was done with one of those fingers as well

Dessie O'Hare is a ** psychopath **. If he never had chance to get involved in something "political" he would still have become involved in violence and mutilation.

So please tell us exactly what Dessie did with the fingers.

"Dessie O'Hare is a ** psychopath **. "

Dessie has been examined by 3 psychiatrists and a psychologist. They all agree that he is sane. How many posters here can claim that sort of record?

Dessie is a qualifying prisoner under the terms of the GFA and should be released.

Many people who received life sentences for killings have already been released under the GFA.

Its only fair to free him, all of the IRA POWs who were serving 40 year sentences were released long ago. Dessie OHare now deserves his freedom. He wasnt convicted of killing anyone while the OIRA members who got life sentences for killing Larry White are also free. I oppose the extradition of Sean Garland and I hope the WP will support the release of Dessie O'Hare.

when Tony McCluskeys fingers were cut off his right index finger was inserted in his anus .

But its hypocricy for OHare to be kept locked up . He should be freed and Garland shouldnt be extradited to the US either . These are legal issues and matters of political principle , not emotional ones . One rule should apply to all or its total hypocrisy . Just because they arent particulary nice people doesnt mean we should have no principles .

Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America

Free Dessie O'Hare Now!

The Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America adds its
voice to the call for the government of the 26 Counties of Ireland to
immediately release republican socialist prisoner of war Dessie O'Hare
from Castlerea Prison and we support the solidarity actions taking
place today in Ireland to highlight his case.

Since 1988, Dessie O'Hare has been serving a 40-year sentence for
kidnapping, the longest sentence in the history of the 26 Counties for
any offence other than capital murder. He meets all of the
requirements for the early release scheme of the Good Friday
Agreement, which even the government of the 26 Counties recognises,
yet he remains imprisoned.

The actions for which Dessie O'Hare was convicted and sentenced were
committed before 1998 as part of the war against British occupation.
He is a recognised member of the Irish National Liberation Army, which
has been on ceasefire since 1998. Under the terms of the GFA, he
should have been released no later than 2000, yet five years later he
remains in prison.

Although the Irish Republican Socialist Movement doesn't support the
GFA, the government of the 26 Counties does. That same government has
repeatedly stated that the GFA is the only way forward, yet it refuses
to uphold the terms of that agreement where Dessie O'Hare is
concerned. It has also forced him to undergo psychiatric examinations,
something no other prisoner has had to do to qualify for early
release. Despite being cleared by the government's own psychiatrists,
he remains in prison.

The IRSCNA says to the government of the 26 Counties, enough of the
game playing. Uphold your responsibilities as mandated by the Good
Friday Agreement and free Dessie O'Hare now!

I think that Des O'Hare should be freed. He has only campaigned for a united Ireland and deserves better than to be locked up in prison.
