Anti-War Activity in Ireland has been given a great boost after five peace activists were arrested yesterday Saturday Sept. 17th at Shannon Airport. Two activists dressed up in orange boiler suits unfurled a banner ' CIA Torturers Out Of Shannon' and 'Cosantoiri Siochana' (Peace Network).
The activists were protesting the CIA's 'extraordinary renditions' programme which Shannon has become complicit in by providing it's facilities and runway/terminal as transit point for the illegal and immoral activity resulting in the torture of human beings. The CIA have been moving 'suspect terrorists' to countries such as Jordan, Egypt, Syria to be tortured by the authorities there in exercises which remind one of similar activities engaged in by the US gvt. and their agencies in Central and South America in the Eighties. This action has transpired just two days after eight secondary school students in Limerick were given grief and threatened with discliplinary action by their principal after handing out anti-war flyers outside their school but on public property and after school hours.
On Saturday next Sept. 24th the IAWM and other peace activists will assemble at Shannon Town Centre from 1pm and march to the airport. There will be a Peace Concert at 2pm.
The Pitstop Ploughshares, currently awaiting trial for disarming a US plane at Shannon in Feb. 2003 will hold a solidarity vigil at Bunratty Castle, five miles from Shannon (one of their bail conditions for dissenting).
The night before the demo. we will host a public meeting in Halla Ide on Thomas st. in Limerick City from 7.30pm entitled 'Shannon And The War On Terror: The War Comes Homes' which will be addressed by Ploughshares defendant and Catholic Worker Ciaron O'Reilly alongside planespotter Tim Hourigan from the Mid-West Alliance Against Military Aggression.
The meeting will be chaired by former Irish Army commandant Ed Horgan. For more info. please contact Damien at 087 9638398
