On the second of September at 1.30pm asylum seekers from around Ireland have to sign on at the GNIB on Burgh quay for possible deportation. This is the Justice Departments new system of fast tracking asylum seekers back to Nigeria.

Women and children from Hatch Hall and Gardiner Street Hostels will be there to protest against their deportation orders and how they are being treated by the immigration authorities these women if sent back to Nigeria face Female Genital Mutilation, sexually slavery and living life as second class citizens.

How can you seriously suggest that no-one should ever be deported from Ireland?

author by SHpublication date Wed Aug 31, 2005 14:35author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Very easily. It's called an open border and RAR have been calling for this for years as have other groups and political parties. A bit slow aren't you?

author by Stephenpublication date Wed Aug 31, 2005 17:18author address author phone Report this post to the editors

To suggest that deportations should end is entirely ridiculous in my opinion.

My only criticism of the asylum process is that it takes far too long. Although Nigeria is not an entirely safe country, neither are parts of the North of our own Country. Based on the facts we have only 0.6% of Nigerian nationals who claim asylum here actually succeeding on the first round. For your organisation who hates our governments human rights record so much, our rate of acceptance is actually high by EU standards. Far from racist and inhumane most people would think.

In accordance with our obligations under the 1951 Convention, our government agrees to determine if that protection (refugee status) is warranted. If it is not, there is no moral ground to simply transform them into refugees on better terms than migrant workers who actually come here to help grow our economy. An open borders policy is a recipe for economic disaster.

The rate of acceptance of Nigerian asylum seekers is much higher in the appeal process. Questions need to be asked why this is and why we are wasting so much money on this system which clearly isn't working. Comparing us to other countries is claptrap and a deflective tactic. We are discussing our asylum sysytem and not others. Other EU countries also have highly flawed immigration sysytems but activists from their are campaigning and have the expertise to comment on it. Also some of the figures that the DOJ used when comparing other countires were completely wrong. Note how the media didn't pick up on this.

You haven't understood the concept of an open border. Their would be no difference between immigrants coming into the country. But since you brought up migrant workers we all know that many are treated as slaves, get low pay, exploited and ignored by some Trade Unions. The work permit system needs to be completely abolished, the new bill introduced by Martin is the same crap with different headings.

Many countries have operated Open borders in the past and they have been highly succesful economies. Economists with the ESRI have also recognised open borders as being economically viable. Of course a lot of racists try to whip up hysteria by saying immigrants steal jobs, lower wages etc., etc. where the reality is that this isn't true. Exploitation does takes place and workers need to unite against the employers and their cronies in government who perpetrate this exploitaion. Of course, some people prefer to blame immigrants and whip up racism, which is exactly what the govt. and many employers want.

You'd think in Ireland that people would be SUPREMELY conscious of the debt we owe other countries who were prepared to allow us in when times were very hard - right up until only 15-20 years ago, in fact. So soon forgotten. Funny, there is hardly a murmur about, for example, the nice, white, Catholic, Polish, really-quite-like-us sort of immigrant, is there? And all that cultural and religious imperialism we've been self-righteously exporting to African and other countries for centuries. How tolerant they've been of all that!

Borders are bullshit.

The world produces enough food to feed its entire population more than three times over each year. And here in fat, bloated yet (economically) uderpopulated Ireland, we talk of the 'disaster' that would allegedly await us if we extended a welcoming hand to the (black?) people who are unable to access the resources we indulge ourselves in with disgusting excess.
Welcome, Nigerian people. We need you very much.

The United States has anything but an open doors approach - an open border policy as has been suggested. Yeah really, that’s why since 2001 deportations have increased by 45%, and that's why they head off Cubans at sea, an open border policy, I don't think so.

There is no way an open borders policy would ever get the public's support, why should everybody and anybody from all over the world be entitled to come here and follow the well worn path to our social welfare, health care and housing services.

How this kind of policy could be justified is really beyond me.

Can you not read the word HAD. The US had an Open Border, as a result at the time it's economy improved and was doing extremely well. It later decided to close off it's borders due to racism whipped up by certain political leaders. An economy isn't stagnant and only fools look at it as such. Also Ireland has an open border with all the other EU countries. This open border area will increase over time. Eventually open borders will become the norm around the entire world. This will take a long time but it will happen. Of course their were people who tried to whip up racist hysteria by saying that opening up our borders to the rest of the EU was going to cause our economy to crash and "dem immigrants will steal our jobs" . Anthony Coughlan also said the same about opening our borders to the new accession EU countries. Thats the problem when you get people who advocate vodoo economics instead of rational economics. Also only fools and racist morons believe that the whole of Africa would then come to Ireland. There are over 375 million people in the EU we can't prevent them at all from coming to Ireland but guess what they don't want to and neither does the whole of Ireland want to live in for example the US.

Would it not be the rational thing to place the work permit in the hands of the workers, instead of permits being in the hands of employers ?

There are indeed legal deportees, these are people who have availed of our "protection" under the 1951 Convention. These people have failed the process and are then duly deported. There should always be a role for deportations, nobody has a right to a free lunch in Ireland. You tell me of another rich country in the EU which currently has an open borders policy. The short answer is, no EU country has such a policy, managed non eu immigration is the way forward.

Tut, tut, tut! is the typical response I would expect from your good self and indeed your organisation. If you can't put together a reasonable defence to valid comments, don't bother making any comment at all.
I repeat my challenge to you, tell me of another rich country in the EU which currently has an open borders policy. None do or will do in the future.

author by SHpublication date Mon Sep 12, 2005 13:22author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Kevin,

The EU has an open border within itself. We never claimed that any EU country has an open border to countries outside the EU so stop trying to pretend that we did. An open border policy is the best policy economically and morally.

This talk of a free lunch is bizzare. Asylum seekers are not allowed to work, the govt. are happy with this situation as it allows people like you to claim that they are sponging. The reality is that asylum seekers want to work and are more than able to work. Of course that doesn't suit your argument so you ignore it.
