‘SURPLUS’- Film Showing Monday 23, May 8.30pm Red Parrot Dorset Street.

"Surplus is an open declaration of war on terror. We are terrorized into
being consumers" Adbusters Magazine

SURPLUS: TERRORIZED INTO BEING

SURPLUS by Swedish filmmaker Erik Gandini.
screens Monday 23rd May 8.30 pm, Red Parrot, Dorset St organised by the SWP.

SURPLUS is an intense visual odyssey filmed over three years in
eight different countries. From the explosive riot days in Genoa 2001 to $7000
sex dolls in the US, SURPLUS explores the destructive nature of consumer culture. Stunning editing and breathtaking cinematography turns the notion that 20% of the world is gobbling up 80% of its resources from pure statistics into an overwhelming emotional experience.

And ironically enough since the comrades of the swp are screening it it is worthy of note that it is philosophically basically an espousal of the Black Bloc tactic on a massive scale

main interviewee/character in it is John Zerzan

Really really creative documentary that rewards repeated viewing

Yeah thought this was a strange choice alright. The start of the film is people fighting back against the Italian cops in Genoa and fairly hardcore property damage sequences. I think the audio intensifies it as well - the noise of the smashing windows and people hacking open the shop shutters seems amplified. Then John Zerzan (primitivist author from Eugene) talking about how property damage isnt violence at all...

But are the SWP who are part of Mobilise Ireland going to be organising violent protests as part of the international black block?

If so I better go with the anarchists.
