Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5Today was one of the better May Day events I've been to in a while. The involvement of the GAMA workers was important. Their case is a sharp example of what capitalism is really about.
I think that the down-side of the day was the rhetorical crap coming from the likes of Eric Fleming, the SIPTU branch secretary for Construction. That man refuses to give money to the GAMA workers. He upholds the laws surrounding "official" and "unnoffical" strikes to make sure that our money is not spent on our fellow workers in need. I'm sure he will do all he can to undermine the strike in the coming week in favour of "negotiations" with GAMA thus allowing the scaps and subbies undermine the strike. The last speaker was full of shite too. Think his name was Noel. Full of rhetoric and doesn't mean a word of it. TU Leaders: match actions with your words!
The important thing for us all to do is to get out onto the pickets with the GAMA workers on Tuesday morning. It all starts nice and early. 5:30am in Ballymun and Balgaddy sites.
How can you have MAYday on April 30th? Who on earth decided to do this? MayDay is supposed to be one, UNIFIED day of celebration. This looks like the shenanigans that took place in the USA when they tried to get rid of the "communist" mayday and replace it with a "Labor Day" in september.

Sorry Calendar Kid. Great conspiracy, shame about the mundane reality. The DCTU executive, rightly or wrongly, went for Saturday April 30th because they considered that would produce a better turn out than a Sunday (May 1st) or the Bank Holiday (Monday).
Actually the May Day marches in Dublin, Belfast and Cork often take place on different days.
Is it true that the GAMA workers are getting no money from SIPTU? It would not, incidentally, be Eric Flemings decision to make.
How did the recruiting go afterwards? (I mean the trade union recruiting to the tune of Bob Marley).
Without the Turkish workers this would have been a desperate dire event. We return to Lou Reed when thinking of Irish workers (students, youth culture, churches etc) and possible dissent (against Shannon Waport, solidarity with others, whatever) "stick a fork in their ass and turn them over, they're done!".
These are desperate times indeedy. Thank you GAMA workers for the spirit displayed in your struggle. Maybe you can help save us from ourselve.
