Scandal in Trinity Election

One of the people wanting to be Education Officer has been booted out of the election. Her name is Lorna Jennings and she was seen by many as the favourite. Everyone's been talking about it in Trinity today. According to www.tcdsu.org she was kicked out for bulk emailing the whole college. This throws the race wide open and is going to run and run.

So she e-mailed 12,000 students using a publicly available mailing list? So what? How is this Spam, any more than Fianna Fail putting election manifestos into your letter box? As a Trinity graudate, I regularly receive unsolicited e-mail, newsletters and electronic Xmas cards (I kid you not) from TCD's Senators....

Unless the users of the e-mail system signed a privacy protection clause saying they didn't want e-mail from other users of the system, she has a good case to sue the arses off the TCDSU and the College.


Let me guess this right - if she had individually typed in each e-mail address, nothing would have been done....

I served on the Electoral Commission in Trinity one year. Looks like they're still an unaccountable shower of zealots who like to run around with walkie-talkies on election day, full of their own self-importance. They should be accountable to the SU Assembly, not TCDSU Council....
