anti-Female Genital Mutilation meeting

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Wednesday November 17, 2004 18:22author by deirdreauthor email anitFGM at gmail dot com

Despite the serious physical and psychological effects of female genital mutilation (FGM) and the fact that in some countries in Africa up to 90% of women undergo FGM, in Ireland at the moment FGM is not explicitly illegal and women can not officially be granted asylum status on the grounds that they or their daughters would be at risk of FGM if returned to their country.
A few of us who were involved in the Campaign Against the Racist
Referendum are initiating an activist-based working group to gather information and look into the possibility of campaigning for changes in the Irish legislation with regard to FGM and other issues relevant to female asylum seekers in Ireland. If you are interested in getting involved come to the first working-group meeting at 7:30 pm Thursday 25th November in the LASC offices.

Meeting: 7:30pm, 5 Merrion Row (off St Stephen's Green), ring the "Latin American Solidarity Centre" bell.
