category meath | environment | news report author Saturday September 25, 2004 01:23author by Moonwolf

Residents of Ratoath Co.Meath took to the roads yesterday (Friday) to protest at Meath County Councils failure to implement traffic calming measures in the village.

The village was the scene of traffic chaos from 5.30p.m as an estimated 500 residents staged a walk through the village as a sizeable Garda presence looked on. The village which lies on a link road between the N3 and N2 was the scene of tailbacks reaching up to two miles long and causing delays of up to 30 minutes.

Residents claim that drivers are using the small rural roads in the village to avoid going through Dunshaughlin, which is a bottle neck. They claim some drivers are reaching dangerous speeds of up to 120 miles per hour at peak rush hour endangering the lives of the villagers, especially young children.

According to one local resident the protests will continue until "effective traffic calming measures are put in place to protect us"
