category cork | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Monday July 05, 2004 22:31author by Paul McAndrew

Cork Pride begins end of July

Gay Pride in Cork will take place over the August bank holiday weekend, starting on Thursday July 29th and running till Monday August 2nd. The weekend will be a celebration of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities and as usual will focus on visibility and fun for all

The cherished elements of Cork Pride, such as the chic Black and White Ball and the Fun Day in the park, will take place along with some new additions, such as the Gay O Limp Licks on Sunday afternoon, at the Mardyke Arena. This will be a chance for the muscled and nimble to compete in such demanding disciplines as The Handbag Discus, The High Heel Sprint, The Three Legged Race (for the well hung and their admirers), and The Glitter Sack Dash. Goody bags and adulation will be bestowed on race winners. The Other Place cinema (South Main Street) will screen each night themed films (camp classics, musicals....) and the audience will be encouraged to dress accordingly and give of themselves during the screening. The screen-shy can steel themselves at the bar before, during and after. The glamour continues at the Black and White Ball on Saturday night in Jury’s Hotel (tickets €50 available from The Other Place Resource Centre: info: gay@projectcork.com or 021 427 8470. Prizes, dinner, dancing and fabulousness till dawn.

On Monday afternoon, the Peace Park, Grand Parade, becomes a gay garden of celebration as gays lesbians bisexuals, transgendered and the as yet undecided, along with their families, gather to sing, dance, picnic and have a gay old time. In Cork, rather than parade around, we prefer to party in style. Over the entire weekend each of the clubs and venues will be organising special events, as will Linc and The Other Place Resource Centre. More pride than you can shake a stick at then, and a chance to rehearse for 2005, when Cork will be European Capital of Culture with a Gay Pride worthy of a European Capital.
