Pat Cox withdraws from Southern Euro

Pat Cox, has announced his intention to withdraw from the European Parliament elections.

Currently Pat is president of the European Parliament, and he had previously declared his intention to run in the Southern Elections.

However, his withdrawal would appear to be linked to the forthcoming round of appointments to the EU Commission.

It is possible that Pat Cox may be nominated as EU COmmission President to replace Prodi. However, this is unlikely to be successful as he is a Liberal, and the next Commission President is due to be a EPP member.

On the presidency, it is doubtful if he would get it.

However, it could be a good ploy by Bertie.

Bertie may want the job himself, but lacks the political connections outside the PMs to get it.

Knowing that the other EU leaders, especially the new comers would favour an anglo-phone over a franco-phone and the general consensus to support a right winger, JOhn Bruton or Chris Patten have been mooted.

Of these Bruton would do well, enjoying huge popularity amongst the Christian Democratic wing of European Politics. However, this would piss Berite off mightly, so he would nominate Cox, knowing full well he would lose, to avoid having Bruton elected.

In return for this fruitless excercise, Gerry Collins would have a clearer run in Munster and Cox may at some stage re-join the PDs or even join FF.

Just a minor mistake in the last post. Ireland currently has the EU Presidency, so Cox needs to be nominated by another EU country as Ireland cant do it.
