Cearnóg na gCainteoirí/Speakers Square
http://freespeech.community.ie/

Where: Temple Bar Square, Dublin Ireland

When: Starting this April 25th 2004

What: Exercise your right to free speech between 12noon and 4pm on that day and on every Sunday thereafter on Temple Bar Square. Cearnóg na gCainteoirí/Speakers Square is an initiative by Rossa Ó Snodaigh in conjunction with 'Temple Bar Outdoors' to provide a forum for the city dwellers to address the public on matters that are of concern to them. They may express opinions, raise the public, share views or simply say some poems.

Who:
Speaking this Sunday...

Aengus Ó Snodaigh from Sinn Féin

Robert Ballagh, Artist

Ciaron O'Reilly from Pitstop ploughshares

Breandan Butler from NGO Peace Alliance Co-ordinator

Eugene Mc Cartan from Communist Party

Tim Hourigan from JailBertie.com

Aoife Ní Scolaí from Conradh Na Gaeilge

Richard Boyd Barrett from Irish Anti War Movement

Cearnóg na gCainteoirí/Speakers Square will be run on a first come first serve basis. Intending speakers will write their names on the back of chalk boards and when their turn arises to speak will write their issues on the front. Speakers will be encouraged to speak in any language, provided it's not foul language. Until a special dispensation is sought (if it really need be sought), the law of the land will apply as it does nationwide - In that it is an offence to incite hatred or slander anyone in public.

The last time Dublin had a speaker's arena was on Elverys Corner (by the GPO) up until the 1950s. The city and the world may have changed since then, but there's been no change in the need for people to voice their views.

Opinions are worse for being repressed and better when they are expressed. So Free your thoughts because small voices can make a big noise.

Wow! Richard Boyd Barrett up on the stage. Finally we will be able to slate him openly and maybe get a response from him over his pathetic procrastinating over the events of last year. Can we also ask him about why he considers himself a socialist but he has loads of money? Come the revolution, will his family assets be seized?

How regular is this going to be? Is it going to be already established political figures all the time?

Do you have to put your real name on the board? I mean will there be Identity requirement due to the possibility of libel action. I want to say a few things but i don't want to be sued.

I'm going to put my name forward. It's about time sombody spoke aout in favour of President Bush - he hAs done such wonderful things to promote peace and security in the world. it's so refreshing to have a resolute Leader of the Free World, such a contrast from slimeball Clinton who fired off a few rockets whnever the Lewinsky scandal got too hot for him.

I know it's vry fashionable to be Anti-American now but to oppose President Bush just flies in the face of reason.

Aine, If that's the best you can do I don't think you would be too impressive a speaker. You would be laughed out of it. I've seen people make complete asses of themselves before.
Spare yourself.
