cycling Campaign Network Conference

category dublin | environment | event notice author Thursday March 11, 2004 00:11author by Anthony - Dublin Cycling Campaign

Yet another event for Mayday

The DCC in association with the Cycle Campaign Network and the UK Cyclists Touring Club will host a conference on May 1st in Trinity College for cycle campaigners in Ireland and the UK. The conference will feature talks by members of various cycling campaigns in the UK and Ireland and also urban designer, Jan Gehl from Copenhagen. The weekend will include social events organised for the evening before, the Saturday night, and Sunday 2nd. This will be the biggest cycle campaigner's conference ever held in Ireland.

The Dublin cycling Campaign (DCC) is delighted to host the Spring 2004 CTC / CCN cycling Conference. It will take place on Saturday 1st May in the Hamilton Building of Trinity College Dublin. For cyclists and campaigners, the weekend will include other events including the monthly Critical Mass with an informal get-together in the pub afterwards, a social event on the Saturday night in the Sugar Club, Lesson Street and cycle tours on the Sunday.

The general theme of the weekend will be "Making Dublin a Bike Friendly City - Lessons for All from 10 Years of Campaigning". It will be of interest to everyone who has worked to make their own town or city bike-friendly, or generally to promote cycling. Speakers will include representatives from the cycling Campaigns in Dublin, Galway and Cork. Representatives from the Dublin Transport Office and the Department of Transport have been asked to speak on the Irish government's past experience and future plan for promoting cycling but have not yet replied. Lively speakers from the UK will update us on developments on issues of interest to campaigners on both sides of the Irish Sea.

The timing of the event comes just one year ahead of the Dublin's hosting of the International Velo-city bicycle conference when 600+ "cycling promotion professionals" will descend on Dublin. This is the UK campaigners' opportunity to listen to Irish campaigner's experiences in advance of that event. Dublin has changed dramatically over the last 10 years, so a visit to the Irish capital will be of interest both to those who have never travelled across the Irish Sea and those who haven't done so in years. Guided cycle tours will be provided by locals on the Sunday (2nd May) to give visitors an insight into all matters local - be they social, political, historical, economic, planning-related, environmental or otherwise.

Details of the event (conference speakers, fees, transport and accommodation options, social events, etc.) will be available on the DCC website. Alternatively, drop a line to CTC / CCN cycling Conference, Dublin cycling Campaign, c/o Will Andrews, 150 Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Dublin cycling Campaign looks forward to welcoming all cyclists and cycle campaigners to Dublin.
