Urgent Crisis Appeal...

Issues Magazine, sold by the homeless and long-term unemployed will be launching its new Belfast Office in Belfast City Centre on Friday 19th December at the Corn Market Bandstand at 4 p.m.(Belfast City Centre)

Issues is encouraging the General Public to come along and donate Sleeping Bags and non-perishable foods in conjunction with the three Agencies that operate on the front-line of the Homeless Crisis in our City. Representatives from the Welcome Centre, Homeplus and Le Heiste will be present on the day from 4 to 6 p.m. to collect the donated items. The recent Spotlight documentary profiling the work of the Welcome Centre in West Belfast and Joe McGuigan highlighted the growing problem of Homelessness in Belfast and this event hopes to gather much needed items that will be directly given to those most in need.

There will be entertainment provided on the day by local musicians and a host of celebrities have been invited along to lend their support to this important event. On the day there will also be the release of the ‘Christmas in the City’ C.D. An original composition by local singer/songwriter Anthony Glackin that is the campaigns theme tune and through which it is hoped to raise much needed funds in the pursuit of the eradication of Homelessness.

Sean Kavanagh, Editor of Issues said prior to the launch:
‘We have set up the office in Belfast in response to the growing homeless crisis in the North of Ireland. The magazine offers an opportunity for members of the homeless community to earn themselves some much-needed income that will help to improve their personal circumstances. We have had a lot of interest from people wishing to sell the magazine and events such as Friday are important to bring attention to the Homeless situation in Belfast and offer an immediate response to the crisis on our streets’

Joe McGuigan, from the Welcome Centre stated:
‘ We are delighted to see Issues setting up in Belfast and we hope that the Public will support Fridays event and bring along plenty of sleeping bags, blankets and foodstuffs that we can directly get to the homeless in our city’

Jon Glackin from the Belfast Issues Magazine office stated:
‘It is essential that we can gather as many items as possible for the three groups who operate on the streets of Belfast at night with the Homeless Community. We at Issues applaud their work intervening at the very front-line of the Homeless crisis with next to no funding. At this time of year particularly with the weather and the festive season it is very important for Issues to initiate this crisis management scheme. The collection offers a very important short term remedy to those on the streets at Christmas time and I believe and hope the Belfast public will respond generously’

Copies of ‘Christmas in the City’ will be available on the day and will be available in many of the music shops in Belfast
