UCC to host another Nazi - Protest on Thursday

category cork | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Friday November 28, 2003 16:38author by John - Cork Against Nazis

BNP Youth Organiser invited to speak at UCC

What is it about University College Cork? The college has a history of inviting apologists for facism. Previous episodes have seen major anti-fascist mobilisations with hundreds of protesters pushing home the message that there will be no free speech for fascists in Cork.

A protest is being held next Thursday night, December 4th in opposition to plans to give a platform to British National Party spokesman Tony Wentworth at the Cork University.

The protest will begin on Thursday at G19 of the Kane Building (former Science Block) at 8.00pm. Use the College Road entrance.

Wentworth, Youth Organiser for the BNP has been invited to speak by the UCC Law Society. In 1999 there was a major demonstration at the college when over 600 protesters prevented Nazi apologist and self-styled historian David Irving from speaking.

Irving has since been totally discredited following a high-profile libel case which he lost.

A previous attempt by Irving was also thwarted. The second visit resulted in the Socialist Society at the university being banned and the college made it clear that such controversial figures would not be invited again. The Law Society has ignored this.

Make your opposition to Tony Wentworth known. Take part in Thursday's protest. Contact UCC and demand that this latest Nazi fest be stopped.

Nice one John. We are hearing conflicting stories about this one such as the talk is cancelled because they insist on bringing their own security. However BNP office in London have apparently confirmed today that he is coming. The essential agrument to make to sceptical students here is that we are not primarily against free speech(although it is not a right that fascists respect) but that nazis should not be afforded the respectability that Speaking in UCC would provide. we stopped David Irving a couple of years ago and we will do so again.

what gives the swp the right to decide who the law soc can and cannot invite.
The food science faculty tamper with dangerous bacteria all day long in order to investigate and expose its nature. Surely exposing the views of the BNP for what they are would be a gretaer victory than using the SWP brown shirts in an act of supression?

You seem completely oblivious to what you actually represent. FACISM.

Your right barry. You dont need to deny the holocaust or get the right tatoos to be a facist.
Violence and supression of freedoms are all that is required.
GOOD JOP SWP

The UCC Law Society meeting for Thursday night has been cancelled or so it seems. Extensive enquiries have been made into whether this meeting is going ahead. There is no need to give chapter and verse of the saga but the Auditor of the UCC Law Society, and a representative of the university have given a catagorical statement to the Irish Examiner that the meeting has been cancelled. A journalist from the Irish Examiner has also spoken to BNP youth organiser Tony Wentworth who as of 3.30pm today hadn't received his plane ticket from the Law Society! The UCC Law Society also told the Examiner that the meeting will instead be held in January. An article will appear in Thursday's Examiner (tomorrow) stating that the meeting has been cancelled. All indications are that this meeting is not going ahead.
The Socialist Party is proposing that a broad based "Stop the BNP Campaign" would be established in order to begin the preparation to stop Tony Wentworth from speaking in UCC in January. Various parties, groups, student societies and individuals will be contacted in the next few days with the proposal to establish this campaign in UCC and Cork City and to have a public meeting to launch it next week.

I am sick of defering to the swp on who can and cannot speak in Cork. Why not round up those you dislike and put them in camps. U ARE THE NAZIS

Mike - SWP

Please stop talking unadulterated horse shite. What is this
"we stopped David Irving a couple of years ago and we will do so again."?

"You" did not stop anyone, in fact the SWP attempted to prevent activists from other groups from entering the building to stop the Irving meeting. When they did so anyway the SWP stood outside with lollipops and refused to take any part in the direct action. The next morning the usual suspects were all over the media claiming 'their' victory.

Revising history is an entertaining little diversion, so you can appear big and brave to new members. It does not wash with anyone who was there.

If anyone wants to check the facts as outlined above they can contact AFA, or the Socialist Party, or SInn Féin in Cork - all of whom participated in actually stopping the Irving meeting.

Fully agree with Fintan, Barry and Adolf. The only pity is that there isn't an Irish National Party holding meetings around the country on a regular basis to give us more opportunities to tamper with dangerous bacteria and expose its nature. Sure, they might get a councillor or two elected every now and again but that would be a small price to pay for the chance to show people how righteously indignant we are about them.

It might be worth ye're while to read the judgement delivered against Irving in the infamous libel case. It acknowldged that Irving was a good historian and had carried out, on other occassions, strong works of hisotry. Irving was however a 'holocaust denier' and therfore the allegation was not a libel but the truth.

Didn't really discredit him though.

whats REALLY DISCREDITING???The protests by the swp/sp/sf/ira/iplo/cie on irvings cork visit were a shot in the arm for him before the libel case. The socialists become what they detest and Irving looks like a paragon of rational discourse.

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas woman was sentenced to 10 years in jail for running over the manager of a McDonald's with her car because she wanted mayonnaise on her cheeseburger.

Waynetta Nolan, 37, showed no emotion Thursday as the sentence was read in court following a trial in which the McDonald's manager, Sherry Jenkins, said she gave Nolan the mayonnaise she requested, but she flew into a rage anyway.

"I gave her everything she asked for -- mayonnaise, no mustard, onions, everything I could possibly do for this lady. Mayo, mayo, mayo, and it's still not good enough," Jenkins told reporters outside the courtroom.

Nolan, who was convicted of aggravated assault for the April 23 incident, became so angry when a McDonald's employee told her she could not get mayonnaise that she threw her cheeseburger into the drive-through the window, witnesses said.

Jenkins tried to placate her by offering a cheeseburger with mayonnaise, but Nolan continued to make demands until Jenkins finally called police.

When she went outside to write down Nolan's license plate number, Nolan ran her over, breaking her pelvis.

Nolan testified that she was putting ketchup on her cheeseburger when she accidentally struck Jenkins.
