The controversial litter pollution byelaws that would prevent the handing out of leaflets by community, voluntary and political groups are to be debated at a meeting of the Environment SPC in Galway City Hall on Tuesday 11th November at 4.30pm. Members of the public are entitled to attend subject to the availability of space.
As a result of the submissions made on the subject the acting Director of Services Michael Burke has recommended the following amendment to the proposed byelaws.
"The Distribution of advertising material to the public within the administrative area of the Council is hereby prohibited with the exception of advertisments announcing any event or issues of a religious, cultural, educational, political, social, recreational or sporting character, not being an event promoted or carried on for commercial purposes."
If this is accepted by the SPC and then the council, it will costitute a victory for the DFSAA group and those who opposed this particular set of byelaws.
The meeting will also discuss a proposal by the City council on waste charges.
