US anti-war activist and film-maker leads discussion

The Global Women's Strike invites everyone to attend the Irish launch of its exciting new film in the National University of Ireland, Galway, this Thursday, 16th October at 7.30pm in the Arts Millennium building. The showing is hosted by the Ecology Society, NUI, Galway. It will be introduced by Phoebe Jones Schellenberg, a point of reference in the anti-war movement in the US and East Coast co-ordinator of the Strike there. Ms Schellenberg will lead the discussion following the film, speaking about what she learned when she and others visited Venezuela at the invitation of the Women's Institute there. She will also bring news of the enormous and growing anti-war movement in the US, so censored from us in Ireland.

The Galway meeting will bring out grassroots women's response to women of the Venezuelan revolution - what we can do for it and what it can do for us. The US has already waged war for oil in Afghanistan, occupied Iraq and is now, via its bullying partner in the Middle East, Israel, threatening Syria and Iran. Fears that the US will attack Venezuela or any country it wishes have led to an enormous international mobilisation to end war, including in Ireland and the US.

Ms Schellenberg has been involved in the women's, anti-war and justice movements for over 30 years. She was the spokesperson for the national July 4th Mobilization Against War at Home and Abroad in Philadelphia. She is an author of The Milk of Human Kindness: Defending Breastfeeding from the Global Market and AIDS Industry. She is a Quaker, has a PhD in Physical Education and co-ordinates the Crossroads Women's Center in Germantown, a multi-racial grassroots centre for support, information and action on issues of concern to women. Phoebe is the mother of a 16 year-old girl.

The GWS's Bolivarian Circle/Philadelphia is a member of the Coalition to Welcome President Chavez which has had to protest the US threats and actions of violence, preventing President Chavez from coming to the US to address the United Nations and speaking to the US public.

The Global Women's Strike is an independent and international network of grassroots women in 61 countries, unwaged and waged, who strike on the 8th March and organise throughout the year to demand the return of the global military budget of $900 billion + under the theme 'Women Say No War: Invest In Caring Not Killing'. It is co-ordinated in Ireland by the Wages for Housework Campaign in Galway. While the Strike welcomes support from all sectors of the anti-war movement, it is independent of other anti-war organisations in Ireland and internationally. In Venezuela, the fifth largest exporter of oil in the world, President Hugo Chavez Frias was elected by a landslide in 1998 to carry out sweeping economic and social reforms to rid the country of poverty and corruption. (80% of the population lives in poverty despite the oil wealth). A revolutionary new constitution was created by the people and passed by a 72% vote. It guarantees rights and marks achievements fought for over years by women, indigenous communities and others who have suffered discrimination - rights still to be won in many countries including Ireland: recognition and valuing of housework as an activity that creates social wealth and therefore payment for it in the form of social security and pension for housewives; land reform; food security through sustainable agriculture; strong measures to tackle domestic violence and machismo in the justice system; no privatisation of water or oil - the oil revenues going to health care, education and other socially beneficial programmes. The caring use of the military in Venezuela has also been highlighted by the Strike. The army has built schools, houses and carried out other tasks with grassroots communities.

In April 2002 the elite, acting with the US government, imposed a military coup. Women from the poorest neighbourhoods of the capital, Caracas, were the first to descend from the hills, demanding the return of their elected president and their constitution. The population, supported by the army rank-and-file reinstated their government. Women's courage and initiative in defeating the coup and a subsequent lock out in the oil industry, is widely acknowledged in Venezuela.

Alas, some former leftists are part of the pro coup alliance trying to bring down Chavez. I am sure Bush would like to whip up an alliance internationally to support the plotters.

If anyone seen the documentary made by two Irish lads about the coup in Venezuala it would be clear to them that the media is the greatest weapon that the US has. They manipulated the entire thing. Class piece of documentary by the lads. If people stopped listening to the drivel from TVs and looked at the facts we'd be a whole lot better off. Our media here is getting as bad as in the states. No fair reporting. Always one-sided.
