Pit Stop ploughshares Plan Overnight Vigil at Opening of the Dáil
Monday 29 Sept 5pm to Tuesday 30 Sept 12noon 2003
On Tuesday night (23 Sept) Ciaron O'Reilly of the Pit Stop ploughshares participated in a discussion on the 'Tragedy of War' with Rev Peter Price, the Anglican Bishop of Bath and Wells, Charlie Bird from RTÉ, Sister Miriam Théresa O'Brien, recently returned from Liberia, chaired by the Irish Times' Miriam Donohoe - with a dance troupe from Uganda.
---
O'Reilly stated that ''War was not an unfortunate tragedy but a profit driven business to facilitate the armed robbery of the poor.'' He pointed out that ''the flipside to Pope Paul VI's insight 'if you want peace work for justice' is if you want to maintain a system of global exploitation prepare for war.''
He reflected, ''Ireland has just been deeply implicit in the massacre of thousands of Iraqi civilians and conscripts. The most visible complicity being the militarisation of Shannon Airport, the passage of 50,000+ US Troops through Ireland and the trashing of Irish neutrality. One U.S. Navy plane that was bound to the theatre had to be turned around and didn't get to go to the Iraq war - this is why we are on trial facing possible further imprisonment. Every Irish institution - church, media, government, academia and even Ireland's anti-war movement - must look at how it failed to seriously address this complicity.''
---
As Bertie Ahern is in New York City offering Irish cannon fodder to the U.S. as an international fig leaf to the illegal U.S. invasion - the Pit Stop ploughshares will vigil at the opening of the Dáil Monday 29 Sept 5pm to Tuesday 30 Sept 12noon.
We will also vigil outside the Fianna Fáil AGM in Kilarny 8am 18 October before returning to the Four Courts on November 3rd.
We Invite all to keep vigil wish us - to stay awake while the powerful desire us to slumber.
We invite all to join us in solidarity on our of non-violent disarmament from Shannon to the Four Courts to acquittal or imprisonment.
