category national | bin tax / household tax / water tax | news report author Thursday September 25, 2003 13:24author by usi member

A number of Students' Unions have discussed the issue of the jailings of Joe Higgins TD and Cllr. Clare Daly, who is a former DCUSU President.

UCDSU passed a motion of support for bin tax protesters. The Executive noted the severity of the sentances for Joe and Clare and the mass opposition to the 'regressive' bin charges.

USI Officer Board also discussed the issue. USI Deputy President, Gareth Keogh, attended the 5000 strong demonstration on Monday. NUI Maynooth SU also discussed the issue, as have IT Tallaght SU.

now that they've discussed it, what are they going to do about it? ALL SU officers in the Eastern area should be out on the demo on tuesday not just a few, they should also mobilise their members! Last year Joe Higgins was a great support to students, now is time to help him and Clare out!

Apparently even the 'radical' Paul Dillon of UCDSU wasn't even too happy with a Sabbatical Officer attending the High Court on Monday where a member of his SU could have been sent to prison for a month! SU officers- stop your ego trips and get down to the work of camapigning for the end of draconian laws that jailed Joe and Clare!

Paul Dillon ran as a kind of radical Labour leftie or something,he I am guessing is too busy eyeing up the girls (plenty of lickarses in SU) and planning drinking nights. He must have came under some pressure, and it wasnt from goddamned Regan either. For fucks sake these two are as right wing as any FG etc. hack

Ah yes, paul Dillon is a secret FGer, I see it all now - that's why he became involved in CFE and took part in plenty of direct action - he was trying to impress Enda Kenny!

Last year Dillon stood on a programme in the SU class rep elections that clearly stated that Class rep trips away were junkets/piss ups for hacks. And that he would use his position on council to have training take place on campus.

Now when in power he is organising the junket and free booze paid for with students money.

A clear sell out.

Look some Unions are backing the Bin tax campaign.
the best way to get more on board is not to criticise those who do. Don't let personal vandettas get in the way in the campaign.
