On Saturday, September 20th, an Anti Bin Tax Protest Rally was held at Fingal County Council Offices,Blanchardstown Town Centre. Gatherings occurred at Corduff, Huntstown, Sheepmore, Fortlawn, and Warrenstown at 1.30pm, later rallying at Fingal Offices around 2.00pm.

A crowd of between 200 and 250 people, young and old, gathered outside Fingal Offices to protest against the bin tax and the jailing of Joe Higgins and Clare Daly. Given the wet weather and dullness of the day, these protestors were quite colourful, organised, vocal and passionate.

Loud soundscapes of “free Joe Higgins” and “axe the tax” filled the area as busy shoppers and drivers stopped to support the protest. After a sustained chanting session, speakers from the Socialist Party, Fingal Anti-Bin Tax group, Trade Unions, and Sein Fein took to the platform to voice their support for Higgins/Daly and the campaign itself. The different array of printed posters and homemade placards visualised protestor’s thoughts and feelings.

It was an ironic setting to have the protest in the Blanchardstown Civic/Shopping Centre. I remember living in Corduff as a young teenager attending a protest march organised by Joe Higgins for the Town Centre to be built (over ten years ago). It was the first protest I ever attended. The people of Blanch had absolutely no facilities at that time and Joe Higgins fought hard to have this centre built. So, it was ironic to be standing in the same place last Saturday were Joe Higgins stood over 10 years ago in a vast field in front of thousands of working class people calling on them to fight for the centre. Fight they did and Town Centre they got.

There is no doubt that Blanchardstown is Joe Higgins’s heartland. The people have always recognised his passion and dedication for the rights of working class communities. Their resolve to continue this protest is now as strong as ever.

Garda kept a low key approach to the demo, and overall it was a good humoured protest which passed without incident.

Show your support for Joe Higgins and Clare Daly and attend the protest on Monday, 22nd Sept, 7.30pm at the Garden of Remembrance.
