Cabra activists blockade bin truck in soldiarity with Fingal

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | news report author Friday September 12, 2003 12:05author by Andrew Report this post to the editors

All bins are still being collected in Cabra (and the Dublin city area) but we felt it was important to send a message of solidarity to Fingal activists and also send a warning to the council that we were prepared for them. Full report at http://struggle.ws/wsm/news/2003/sept12dunard.html

To publically state that that it would be an objective of the anti bin tax movement to not only stop taxes being imposed on dublin communities, but to have existing charges removed for the rest of the country should your dublin campaign succeed.
A lot of the negative opinion reported in the media is from people who think that dublin people are free loaders and if they should have to pay then why not you. Somebody should publically state that nobody should have to pay and that if the campaign in dublin is successful they will try to have all charges across the country removed

Also think solidarity with Dublin from rest of country is important.

If possible it would be good to have anti-bin tax protesters from Drogheda, Cork, Waterford, etc. travel to Dublin and join demos with banners or if that's not possible hold local solidarity actions.

I've heard radio interviews in which campaigners have pointed out that Dublins victory over the water charges resulted in the abolition of charges everywhere in the country. And that logically the same would follow in this case.

It's probably worth pointing out that phone ins to radio shows are very open to manipulation. Political parties and campaigns often have members lined up to phone in as 'ordinary residents' with pre-prepared spins. I suspect the government parties have been up to this as two themes are very obvious

1. They are all outside agitators
2. Everyone on my street has paid (this one is quite funny as it leaves you wondering where the non-payers are).

I'm sure some are also genuine but be aware FF/PDs are well aware of having the value of an 'ordinary resident' on the radio saying 'why should Dublin get away with it'.

I'm aware that there is a radio list, and the imc CD has been sold, but is there attempt being made to secure imc space on air in Ireland? This can mean one of many things:
1.setting up a radio.
2.securing space on a community radio.
3.entering RTE dressed as wombles and seizing the microphone.
4.prearanged mass calling of phone in shows.
5.infiltration of call in shows.
6.close monitoring of call in shows.(remember cork st non-existent trees that started a non-existent campaign).
7.disrupting existing radio services by electronic means.
8.disrupting existing radio services by physical means.
9.subversion of existing time slots by friendly bands/comedians/interview guests.
10.subversion of existing radio advertisments.
11.sypmathetic feature in the Sunday Papers media supplement.

now many of these possibilities would get you in trouble if they went down on your permenant record, you wouldn't get that green card and your parents would be ashamed of you. So you'll have to be wise and pick your way forward carefully.

The word is that non collection is about to start in Dun Loaghaire next week. as there are only 3 trucks to my knowledge it should be possible to blockade relatively easily. I've heard nothing this week. Is ANYONE from the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Campaign out there ?!?!??!?!?!??!?

- lets get moving

WELL DONE to every one in Fingal and Dublin city

Where there any solidarity blockades in that area today?

author by pat cpublication date Fri Sep 12, 2003 18:19author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Apparently nothing organised in area at present. He is hoping to meet up with other members of local campaign at WTO Demo (2moro, Sat, Central Bank, 2pm) and have something organised for Monday.

The SWP are still going around organising their pathetic GR meetings and pulicity stunts. Where are they on the ground? I thought RBB was calling himself an anti bin tax activists, but he doesn't seem to active at all.

The SWP shy away from the bin tax when the shite hits the fan- why? Because they have no base in working class communities and no respect for their antics in the bin tax campaign.

ignore the troll. swp members are involved.

Firstly just to echo Pat the SWP have been involved in many blockades in Fingal and the city and indeed Brid Smith was on News talk today (Monday 15th) promising more in the city area - so credit where it is due

there are now three meetings upcoming in Dun Laoghaire.

According to the Irish Times DUN/Rathdown council will comemnce non collection "soon"
the depot is in Dun Loaghaire town and easy to lobby and the place is full of good potential cul de sacs for blockades

The three meetings are

Public Meeting, Thurs 18th Sept 8pm, DFRC, Dundrum/Ballinteer

Public Meeting, Thurs 18th Sept 7:30pm, Kingstown Hotel, Dun Laoghaire (near the see front off adelade road)

Public Meeting, Wed 24th Sept 8pm, Dom Marmion Hse, Dundrum

well done to every one in city and Fingal areas -hold your nerve - we can win this !

Factual correction: One SWP member has been involved in the blockades in Fingal. One.

SWP members have attended events in some parts of the ex-Corporation area though.
